Marvel Studios will expand on the Multiverse Saga even further with the release of What If…? season 2, set to explore new alternate realities in the MCU. After Loki season 1 introduced the concept of the multiverse in the MCU’s Phase 4, Marvel Studios Animation developed What If…? as a means of exploring alternate timelines, where major choices in the MCU’s continuity were taken in a different direction. What If…? season 1 debuted variant characters such as super soldier Captain Carter, an evil version of Doctor Strange, T’Challa’s Star-Lord and an Infinity Stone-powered Ultron, but What If…? season 2 is set to introduce new versions of some iconic MCU heroes.

As well as marking the return of Jeffrey Wright as the voice of the enigmatic Watcher, What If…? season 2’s cast of characters brings back variants of Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Wanda Maximoff’s Scarlet Witch, Hela, Gamora and Hank Pym’s Ant-Man. The upcoming season will also debut an original MCU hero, Kahhori, who becomes empowered by the Tesseract after it crashes on Earth in pre-colonial America. What If…? Season 2 Contains 9 Episodes

What If…? season 2 is set to be the final MCU project of 2023, premiering on Disney+ on December 22. While previous episodes of MCU shows have released weekly, and Phase 5’s upcoming Echo will release its five episodes simultaneously in January 2024, What If…? season 2 will release an episode every day for nine straight days. During a Q&A panel promoting What If…? season 2 (via The Direct), executive producer Bryan Andrews noted that “it’s like every day you get a brand-new gift.” This makes What If…? season 2 a true Holiday project for Marvel Studios, a role filled in 2022 by The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

What If…? Season 2 Release Schedule Explained

What If…? season 2 will be premiering on Disney+ on December 22, 2023, and running for nine days over the Holiday period, with the finale airing on December 30. All nine episode titles for What If…? season 2 were confirmed by Marvel Studios on December 15, 2023, and the series will kick off with “What If… Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?” Episodes and 3, “What If… Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?,” were screened at a Q&A panel with the series’ creatives on December 11, 2023. What If…? season 2 will also continue storylines introduced in season 1, particularly with the episode, “What If… Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?”
