Here’s how many episodes are in Dexter: New Blood. Showtime’s hit crime thriller series returned in 2021 to continue the story of Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) years after the events of the hated Dexter series finale. The announcement for New Blood came in late 2020 when Showtime ordered a continuation of the series. In an effort to fix the issues many fans and people involved with the series had, original showrunner Clyde Phillips returned for Dexter: New Blood to help craft a new ending for the serial killer’s story.
After spending the previous eight seasons in Miami, Florida, Dexter: New Blood shifts its story to Iron Lake, New York. It is in this new town that Dexter Morgan has started a new life for himself as a shopkeeper named Jim Lindsay. The story takes place 10 years after Dexter‘s finale and shows him reuniting with his estranged son Harrison (Jack Alcott) and in a new relationship with local police officer Angelia Bishop (Julia Jones). The story of Dexter: New Blood revolves around Dexter attempting to live this normal life while keeping his darker tendencies at bay. However, the events that begin to transpire in Iron Lake result in him having doubts about his ability to hide the “Dark Passenger” within him.
The first episode of Dexter: New Blood premiered on Showtime on November 7, 2021. Now that Dexter is officially back, fans will be able to continue unraveling his story for the next several weeks. Dexter: New Blood has 10 episodes in total that all air exclusively on Showtime. The new episodes debut every Sunday at 9 pm EST. Based on Dexter: New Blood‘s episode count and release format, audiences will see the finale in early January 2022.
The early response to Dexter: New Blood has been quite positive. Michael C. Hall’s return as Dexter Morgan (living as Jim Lindsay) is a treat for long-time fans since he’s effortlessly returned to the role several years after Dexter‘s finale. More importantly, the storylines, overall premise, and execution of the story of Dexter: New Blood are much closer in quality to the show’s earlier seasons than the latter seasons. Although there is always a chance the revival won’t be able to stick the landing, the content delivered so far merits the favorable response Dexter: New Blood has received.
As Dexter: New Blood is currently conceived, there are no plans for the show to extend beyond its current 10 episode order. Showtime’s president Gary Levine has called the new batch of episodes “a proper finale for a brilliant series.” While Hollywood’s plans change all the time due to great success, it is unclear if that will happen for Dexter: New Blood. For now, fans should be satisfied with the 10 new episodes coming from the revival and not expect more of Dexter’s story afterward.
