How Jared Leto Lost His Dallas Buyers Club Oscar

How Jared Leto Lost His Dallas Buyers Club Oscar

Jared Leto explains how he lost his Dallas Buyers Club Oscar, and why it took him so long to realize it. Leto has been acting consistently since the early 1990s, with his breakout role coming in the television series My So-Called Life. However, 2013 saw a major career resurgence for Leto when he took on the role of Rayon, an HIV-positive trans woman, in the critically acclaimed Dallas Buyers Club. Acting opposite Matthew McConaughey, Leto earned raves for his immersive performance, though some took issue with a cis man playing the part of a trans woman. Nevertheless, Leto won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Since then, Leto has boarded a number of high-profile projects, with several more on the way. In addition to leading the latest offshoot in Sony’s growing Marvel universe, Morbius, Leto will be a part of the highly-anticipated Zack Snyder’s Justice League. For the first time since 2016’s Suicide Squad, Leto will play the Joker. He was not originally part of Snyder’s Justice League, but was instead added during reshoots last year. Nevertheless, his involvement has drawn a great deal of interest from fans.

While appearing on The Late Late Show with James Corden to discuss his new film The Little Things, Leto admitted he’s lost track of his Dallas Buyers Club Oscar. Corden first asked Leto if it was true he had misplaced it and if he had found it, which led Leto to reveal it took him a while to even learn it was gone. Leto explained:

I found out that it’s been missing for, like, three years. I didn’t know that. I don’t think anyone wanted to tell me. I moved houses in L.A. and then when we moved, it somehow just magically kind of disappeared. It could be somewhere, but everyone’s searched for it high and low.

I hope it’s in good hands wherever it is, but we haven’t seen it for quite some time… It’s not the sort of thing somebody throws in the trash. I hope someone is caring for it.

How Jared Leto Lost His Dallas Buyers Club Oscar

Leto is hardly the first actor to admit they’ve lost their Oscar, as celebrities like Angelina Jolie and Matt Damon have done the same. It’s unfortunate to lose track of something as momentous as an Academy Award, but perhaps Leto will get the chance to replace it in the future. This weekend will see the release of The Little Things both in theaters and on HBO Max, the first movie to be released under Warner Bros.’ 2021 streaming plan. Leto stars opposite Denzel Washington and Rami Malek in the crime thriller.

Beyond that, Leto has quite the packed slate ahead. Beyond Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Morbius, the actor will lead the long-awaited third Tron film. Little is known about Tron 3 at this point, though Leto has been attached for years and seemed to begin training for it in recent months. That might not be the project to replace his Dallas Buyers Club statuette, but it will surely be just as exciting for audiences.
