How Huck Cracks Elizabeth’s Safe In Walking Dead: World Beyond

The Walking Dead: World Beyond‘s Huck/Jennifer Mallick is able to crack her mother, Elizabeth’s, safe in season 2 episode 5 “Quartervois.” This allows her to find documents related to the destruction of the Omaha settlement that exposes Elizabeth’s orchestration of the atrocity. It is not clear how she is able to figure out the code. However, a certain item shown in her mother’s office may hold the answer.

Throughout season 1, Huck works as a double agent for Elizabeth, ensuring that she safely transports Hope to a rendevous where Elizabeth can bring her to the CRM’s main base. In season 2, she is trying her best to get Hope to trust her while doubting whether she is doing the right thing by working for her mother. It isn’t until season 2 episode 5 that all of that changes. After craking Elizabeth’s safe, Huck finds papers that prove that the CRM destroyed Omaha. This causes her to completely lose trust in her mother and ultimately confide in Leo about her plan to turn on the CRM.

What helps Huck crack the code on Elizabeth’s safe is the picture of her family that she looks at while searching through her mother’s office. The image shows Huck as a child with her father and a younger Elizabeth. More importantly, it helps her come to the conclusion that the code may pertain to her father.

Though not outright confirmed in season 2 episode 5, it seems that the code may be the date of Huck’s father’s birthday. What supports this is how there is a close-up of her father’s face after she tries out several different combos on the safe. This cuts back to Huck, who puts in the right combination following what appears to be a recollection.

Not much is known about Huck’s backstory in relation to her father. There are hints that he was estranged from his family before the outbreak began, but given that Huck retains the name Mallick (which is likely her father’s last name,) it appears that she maintained a very close relationship with him. The code being his birthday also proves that he meant a lot to Elizabeth as well, and her keeping the picture further proves that. Therefore, it makes sense why she would use something as personal as her husband’s birthday as the code for her safe.

Again, nothing is confirmed in Walking Dead: World Beyond regarding whether Huck deduces that the combination to her mother’s safe is her father’s birthday. Still, the evidence supported by the picture likely leads to that being the case. Either way, now that Huck has learned the CRM’s true evil nature, it’ll now be on viewers’ minds as to how she will go about her plans. Will she turn on her mother, or does knowing she still loves her father lead her to believe she can be reasoned with? Those questions will likely be answered as season 2 comes to its conclusion.
