How Hitman 3’s Ending Sets Up Hitman 4

How Hitman 3’s Ending Sets Up Hitman 4

Hitman 3 marks the end of the World of Assassination trilogy which began with the 2016 release of Hitman. Like the previous games, Hitman 3’s main storyline takes the franchise’s long-time protagonist Agent 47 to stunning locations around the world to do what he does best – assassinate targets. The game’s striking environments and death-defying hitjobs build up to a satisfying conclusion between Agent 47 and his handler Diana, and while Hitman 3 might be the finale of the franchise’s World of Assassination narrative, its final moments set up Agent 47’s next chapter in what will inevitably be Hitman 4.

[Warning: Spoilers for Hitman 3 below.]

IO Interactive’s most recent launch tied up all of Hitman 2‘s loose ends and deepened the relationships between Agent 47 and his handler Diana Burnwood. Towards the tail-end of Hitman 3, Diana seemingly betrays Agent 47 by setting him up to be captured by the game’s main antagonist, Arthur Edwards (The Constant). On the surface, this might seem like Diana getting revenge on Agent 47 for murdering her parents, but she ends up paving the way for him to kill Arthur so she could become The Constant herself. That surprising ending has interesting implications for the future of the Hitman series.

The final mission of Hitman 3 sees Agent 47 awaken in a lab aboard a train winding through snowy mountains. The assassin fights his way to the front of the locomotive, where he encounters The Constant and has the choice to either kill him or wipe his memory. Now Diana can claim the title for herself, and Agent 47 escapes the train and sets off into a nearby forest, apparently done with his deadly line of work for good.

Hitman 3: Where Does The Series Go Now?

How Hitman 3’s Ending Sets Up Hitman 4

Of course, Agent 47 wouldn’t leave the World of Assassination so abruptly. Hitman 3 then picks up a year later, with Agent 47 hiking in the snow. He enters a log cabin and takes a phone call, and says, “I chose this path because I can. There will always be people like them, So there will always be people like us.” Diana responds on the other end and says, “No one is untouchable,” which makes 47 smirk and say, “It’s good to be back.

This sets up perfectly for Hitman 4, where Diana and 47 are no longer just a hander and tool; they’re partners. Hitman 3 ends by showing players just how cunning Diana can be, and with the help of Agent 47’s lethal prowess, the two will make for a deadly duo in the next chapter of the series. While fans might not get a new installment of Hitman any time soon since IO Interactive is currently developing a new 007-themed game, Hitman 4 has essentially been confirmed. Even if the game goes with its secret ending as the canon one, Agent 47 still has lots more work to do.
