How Godzilla x Kong Ending Culminates Kong’s Journey Explained By New Empire Director

Warning: Major spoilers for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire below!

Kong has finally earned his title in Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, and its director views it as the culmination of his story. In the follow-up to the original Godzilla vs. Kong, the fifth iteration of the Monsterverse features Kong recruiting Godzilla to join him in the fight against the Skar King. With an entire army serving under the Skar King, they need to save a fellow Titan while also protecting the surface world from the horrors of the Hollow Earth.

The New Empire director Adam Wingard is happy to say that Kong’s story has reached its natural conclusion. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wingard explained that Kong finally earned the title “King Kong” in this sequel. While he found somewhere to live in Godzilla vs. Kong, Kong found his loyal subjects during the Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire ending, and Wingard views it as the perfect narrative direction for his character. Check out his comments below:

“The MonsterVerse version of Kong has very notably just been ‘Kong.’ The trajectory of him as a character throughout this series has always been to crown him as King Kong,” Wingard says. “That’s what this film is about. It’s the culmination. In Godzilla vs. Kong, Kong found his home, but he had no subjects. He was alone. This is the one where he finds his people, and he has to earn the right to be their leader. For this version of Kong, everything has all been leading to this.”
