How Assassin’s Creed Jade Is Changing AC Combat & Gameplay

Leaked footage of the mobile game Assassin’s Creed Jade has revealed how the franchise’s iconic open-world gameplay will change to fit mobile devices. The historical fiction franchise has a number of installments currently in the works, including next year’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage and the mysterious horror game Codename Hexe. The mobile installment Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade will bring fans to Medieval China, and the portable adventure will change gameplay to suite its unique platform.

A series of leaked Assassin’s Creed Jade videos, reportedly taken from a beta test of the mobile game, recently shed light on the elusive project. The game will seemingly take place in Yongning, a rural village in Beijing, around the year 215 BCE. Players will take control of a customized playable character named Juzi, who will fight back an invasion by the nomadic Xiongnu tribe alongside the legendary Chinese Assassin Wei Yu. The story of Assassin’s Creed Jade seems to be a new full-size entry in the ongoing historical saga, but gameplay might be dumbed down significantly to suit mobile platforms.

Combat Is Simplified In Assassin’s Creed Jade

Based on leaked gameplay of the upcoming project, Assassin’s Creed Jade will overhaul combat to make the experience more streamlined for mobile device. Combat in most modern installments in the franchise involves blocking, dodging and performing various forms of attacks, but Jade seems to simplify this system to suit its touchscreen controls. The protagonist Juzi appears to attack with a flurry of button presses, making a strong offense more important than a cunning and patient defense. The leaked Assassin’s Creed Jade videos do show off a variety of special attacks, which promise to keep combat engaging, but Juzi is rarely seen blocking or evading foes in this gameplay.

Assassin’s Creed Jade Features Touchscreen Parkour

The touchscreen controls in Assassin’s Creed Jade will also make freerunning much more straightforward. The classic Assassin’s Creed parkour system was very in-depth, with players manually adjusting their speed and timing button presses to perform acrobatic jumps. More recent entries in the series have downplayed the importance of freerunning, and now Assassin’s Creed Jade seems to further simplify traversal to match its touchscreen controls. Players will use just one finger to steer Juzi around, with an Auto Run button making the Assassin instantly climb, jump or sprint. This means that the protagonist will automatically go wherever the player wants them, removing the need to make tricky jumps using sensitive touchscreen controls.

Assassin’s Creed Jade aims to translate the franchise’s iconic open-world gameplay into a mobile experience, while also immersing players in its fascinating Medieval China setting. However, the project’s touchscreen controls mean that some big gameplay changes will be made. Early gameplay footage of the Assassin’s Creed game set in China suggests that the mobile title’s combat will be significantly simplified, and parkour traversal will also be streamlined to fit the game’s touchscreen controls. Assassin’s Creed Jade has the potential to be one of the series’ most unique upcoming entries, but dumbing down gameplay could make it a less engaging experience.
