How Ahsoka Set Up The Live-Action Debut Of A Classic Jedi: Fallen Order Character

Ahsoka season 1 set up the live-action debut of an integral Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor character. Ahsoka season 1 changed Star Wars forever – it introduced an entirely new galaxy, brought various animated characters to live-action for the first time, and set up the next wave of Star Wars storytelling during the New Republic era. Not only that, but Ahsoka has also challenged the audience’s understanding of the Force. A character who previously showed no signs of Force-sensitivity is now a full-fledged Jedi Padawan, and the power of the Dathomirian Nightsisters has never been more significant.

Now that Ahsoka has officially been renewed for season 2, it’s interesting to see where Ahsoka Tano’s and the New Republic’s story might be headed next, especially as Grand Admiral Thrawn has returned to Star Wars’ primary galaxy. Thrawn has enlisted the help of the Great Mothers, three Nightsister leaders who have seemingly convinced Thrawn to return to the desolate planet of Dathomir. This small story thread could lead to a huge link between Ahsoka and some of Star Wars’ most compelling canon video games: the Star Wars: Jedi series.

Merrin Is One Of The Last Dathomirian Nightsisters

How Ahsoka Set Up The Live-Action Debut Of A Classic Jedi: Fallen Order Character

Jedi: Fallen Order follows Cal Kestis, an Order 66 survivor scouring the galaxy to find a list of young Force-sensitives before the Empire. During his journey, he heads to the planet Dathomir, which has been abandoned since the days of the Clone Wars when Darth Sidious and Count Dooku destroyed what was left of the Nightsisters’ society. Cal is not alone on the planet, though – there, he meets Merrin, a powerful adversary and one of the few surviving Nightsisters. Eventually, Cal and Merrin strike up a friendship, and she agrees to help him on his quest, a story which is followed up on in Jedi: Survivor.

Merrin is a powerful fighter herself – she wields Nightsister magick, which is another way of accessing the dark side of the Force, using it to help Cal fight against the Empire and smuggle people to safety through the Hidden Path, as depicted in Survivor. So far, however, Merrin has only appeared in Star Wars: Jedi-related narratives. But of all the canon game characters, Merrin is most likely to appear in live-action – specifically, in Ahsoka season 2.

The Nightsisters of Dathomir are one of the strangest, most powerful forces in the galaxy – and Ahsoka hints at what may be their true origin.

Merrin Could Be Called Upon By Ahsoka’s Great Mothers

The Great Mothers of Ahsoka stand in the foreground with their Peridea temple in the background.

Though the Great Mothers’ motives for returning to Dathomir with Thrawn are currently unknown, it’s entirely plausible they are planning on resurrecting their fallen society on the planet. They’ve been stuck on Peridea for who knows how long, biding their time, working with Thrawn and Morgan Elsbeth, another surviving Dathomirian Nightsister, to get back to Star Wars’ primary galaxy. Before Morgan Elsbeth died in Ahsoka, she plainly stated that her actions were “for Dathomir,” suggesting that she hoped to restore Dathomir’s power and the Nightsisters’ influence in the galaxy. Now that Elsbeth is dead, however, the Nightsisters may be looking for someone else to aid them in this hypothetical quest.

Enter Merrin. The Star Wars: Jedi games take place during the height of the Empire’s reign, and Cal Kestis is notably absent from any other stories set during or after the original Star Wars trilogy. As with all Order 66 survivors, there needs to be a plausible reason for him not to be present, and it’s unfortunately entirely possible that Cal will be killed or disappear in a future Star Wars: Jedi installment. This would leave Merrin’s path wide open, however, and perhaps, in her solitude and grief, she will return to Dathomir and pledge herself to the Great Mothers, helping them in Ahsoka season 2.
