How Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp’s Custom Map Generation Will Work

The release date for Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp was recently announced during the February 2020 Nintendo Direct, with an added bonus feature never before seen in the franchise. While the game was revealed during Nintendo’s E3 presentation in 2021, news has been quiet, ever since this rerelease of the series was delayed to the Spring of 2022. Fans will be able to enjoy the first two Advance War games on the Nintendo Switch, with enhanced graphics and online multiplayer. For the first time, players in Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, will also be able to create custom maps and share them with friends across the world.

There have been four entries to the series since its launch in 2001, two on the Game Boy Advance and two on the Nintendo DS. Players have not had the chance to experience a new entry to the franchise, since Advance Wars: Days of Ruin was released in 2008. The games feature tactical turn-based strategy and were originally created by Intelligent Systems, the team behind the Fire Emblem series. The American company, WayForward, is hoping to revitalize Advanced Wars on Nintendo Switch, with Re-Boot Camp. In the series, players take the role of a Commanding Officer (CO), gaining access to special abilities that affect the battle in various ways, such as giving a specific unit-type extra attack damage. The games are beloved for the strategic use of land, air, and naval combat to achieve victory.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp will allow players to make their own custom maps. These stages can be easily edited using the in-game tools available in the Design Room. Players will be able to customize all buildings and terrain, to make their perfect battlefield. Land can be removed to allow for an intense war on the ocean, or additional airports can be built for more aerial support. These custom maps can be shared with other tacticians online.

Advance Wars 1+2 New Features Include Custom Maps

The Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp trailer, which was shown during the February 2022 Nintendo Direct, is above. The remake of these classic turn-based games will feature voice acting for the COs, adding more personality to these tacticians. Players can refine and optimize their strategies, by speeding up combat and resetting their turn. For the first time in the series, Re-Boot Camp has online multiplayer, allowing fans to test their wits against others from around the world. Since the last game was released over a decade ago, now is an excellent opportunity for veterans to test out new strategies.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp brings the first two games to Nintendo Switch, with enhanced graphics and new features. Unfortunately, the trailer makes it unclear if custom maps can be used for online battles. The lighthearted story of the games is balanced by the complex strategy of the combat. Both new and old fans can look forward to Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp on April 8, 2022.
