Horizon Zero Dawn VR Mod Makes Its World Even More Immersive

Modder LukeRoss developed a VR mod for Horizon: Zero Dawn that further immerses players in the incredible sci-fi world. Produced by Killzone creator Guerrilla Games, Horizon: Zero Dawn originally hit store shelves for the PS4 in early 2017. The critically acclaimed open-world title migrated to PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store in summer 2020, inviting a wider audience to explore the mysteries of Guerrilla’s post-post-apocalyptic setting.

Man and machine co-exist in this particular sci-fi adventure, in which massive animal-like machines either roam in peace or become aggressive at the first sight of a human’s presence. Horizon: Zero Dawn ended on quite the cliffhanger, leaving the door open for another deep dive into the mysterious world’s lore. And it seems as though Guerrilla Games will follow it up in spades with the February 2022 release of a sequel, Horizon: Forbidden West. The footage and details shared, thus far, indicate the sequel will elevate the intense third-person action featured in the original entry. But what if there existed another way to amplify Horizon: Zero Dawn’s action?

As spotted by Wccftech, modder LukeRoss recently created a VR mod for Horizon: Zero Dawn that PC players can download upon subscribing to his Patreon page. YouTuber Cas of Cas and Chary VR tested the Zero Dawn VR mod and described it as “absolutely stunning.” Apparently, the mod works well with all virtual reality headsets available on PC, meaning almost anyone on the platform should be able to hop in if they have access to the proper set-up. Cas noted during the video that LukeRoss’ “experimental first-person mode” can be toggled on and off, so Horizon’s third-person exploration remains an option even in virtual reality. (The YouTuber demonstrates as much around the 2:45 mark.) In a pinned reply on the video, Cas implies that frame rate drops seen in the video were due to recording and not the actual game.

Again, the only way to access Horizon: Zero Dawn’s impressive VR offering is by supporting LukeRoss on Patreon. His page boasts a single tier, “VR Friend,” which costs $10 a month and also includes access to a Red Dead Redemption 2 VR mod.

Aloy’s first adventure looks incredible in the VR footage shown above. It raises the question of whether this counts as something Sony would pursue internally, especially since the next PlayStation VR device will reportedly release in 2022. Showing off a Horizon VR experience around the time of Forbidden West‘s launch would likely go a long way in garnering even more interest in the platform holder’s VR initiative.

Horizon: Zero Dawn is available to play now across PC, PS4 and PS5 platforms.
