Kenan Thompson revealed that the Home Alone reboot is still happening despite delays. Disney+ first announced the reimagining of Chris Columbus’ classic 1990 film back in 2019, stating the story will focus on a new kid named Max (Archie Yates). Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Ellie Kemper and Deadpool 2‘s Rob Delaney face-off against Max after he steals a priceless heirloom to save his family from financial ruin. The cast is rounded out by Saturday Night Live stars Thompson, Chris Parnell, and Mikey Day, who co-wrote the screenplay with fellow SNL writer Streeter Seidell.
The new Home Alone movie is helmed by Dan Mazer, a longtime collaborator of Sacha Baron Cohen. He’s got some big shoes to fill, as Columbus’ original redefined what a family comedy could be and is now considered one of the most beloved films of all time. Mazer dove into principal photography with his team in February of 2020. Of course, that didn’t last too long due to the COVID-19 pandemic and all of the restrictions it placed. It wasn’t until November that Disney delighted fans by announcing that all the previously-halted productions had resumed filming.

According to one of the film’s stars, the new Home Alone is finally back on track. While paying a virtual visit to Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live clubhouse, Thompson answered a fan question about the status of the anticipated project. Check out his response below:
“It was a long shoot. It started in Canada and got shut down and then came back around because of the pandemic. It’s been very splotchy as far as trying to get it done is concerned. I think they’re getting very close to finishing it. I did ADR for it recently, so that’s usually one of the last steps. So, it’s coming out.”
Thompson also touched on how his co-star Kemper “couldn’t be nicer.” Otherwise, the longtime SNL cast member, who appeared to be calling in from his dressing room at 30 Rock, kept his Home Alone‘s cards close to his chest. He was first announced as part of the film in July of 2020, despite production being shut down. Between Thompson and his SNL writer pals, to Kemper, Delaney, and other attached comedic performers, it’s safe to assume this reboot will be amping up the comedy.
Columbus’ original Home Alone produced heaps of hilarious moments that have since been minted as iconic. Of course, comedy has changed in the 30 years since John Hughes’ first, giving Mazer and co. fertile ground to set their new version on. While Columbus has been vocal about his disdain for the upcoming Disneyfied version, the entertainment industry is a well-oiled reboot machine at this point. As long as the film finds its own magic, audiences will no doubt be delighted to watch.
