Hobbs & Shaw and Star Wars: The Mandalorian Both Just Finished Filming

The Fast and the Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw and the Star Wars Disney Plus streaming series The Mandalorian have both wrapped filming. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham head up the cast of Hobbs & Shaw, which takes the title characters away from the main Fast and the Furious franchise for their own wild adventure. Fans got their first taste of the movie’s over-the-top action when the first trailer dropped during the Super Bowl.

Not be outdone, the Star Wars universe is expanding too, as Disney prepares to launch their own streaming service. Headlining the new Disney Plus is The Mandalorian, a series focusing on a warrior from the same race as the iconic bounty hunter Boba Fett. Set after the fall of the Empire but before the rise of the First Order, the series’ story reportedly involves the titular Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) finding a child on one of his missions and taking the young one under his wing.

Both Hobbs & Shaw and The Mandalorian are highly-anticipated projects to be sure, and both are now one step closer to arriving on screens. As reported by Superhero News, The Mandalorian has wrapped filming on its first season according to crew members who apparently jumped the gun by posting on social media (the posts have already begun disappearing). In addition, Dwayne Johnson has revealed on Instagram that his Vin Diesel-less Fast and the Furious spinoff has now wrapped filming too. Johnson seems relieved to be done with shooting on the film, as he called it “the most challenging” he’s ever starred in. See below Johnson’s photo and video posts commemorating the shoot’s end:

As revealed in the film’s first trailer, Hobbs & Shaw carries on the action tradition of Fast and the Furious, and even ups the ante by introducing a super-soldier character played by Idris Elba. The star power in Hobbs & Shaw is already pretty high, but it was almost even higher, as Jason Momoa was at one time sought to join Johnson, Elba and Jason Statham in the cast (but unfortunately had to turn down the role due to scheduling issues). Given the massive worldwide popularity of the Fast and the Furious movies, which have grossed a staggering $5.1 billion worldwide, it’s a pretty safe bet that Hobbs & Shaw will also do well at the box office.

As for The Mandalorian, though the series is a spinoff of Star Wars that features many elements familiar to fans, including several returning characters from the original trilogy, the project is arguably somewhat more of a gamble for Disney than Hobbs & Shaw is for Universal. Disney is hoping for a big launch when Disney Plus arrives later in 2019, and The Mandalorian is a big part of their push to appeal to fans with new content connected to their biggest pre-existing franchise. A lot is riding on showrunner Jon Favreau’s first live-action Star Wars streaming spinoff series, and its success or failure could conceivably affect Disney’s plans for more live-action Star Wars streaming content going forward.
