Hitman 3 Ending (& Story) Explained

IO Interactive’s Hitman 3 promises a conclusion to the World of Assassination story the franchise has been building since 2016, and by the time the credits role the game has definitely delivered. Agent 47 and his handler Diana have been through a lot together, but the story and twists of Hitman 3 have stretched their relationship more than ever before, and it may mean interesting things for the future of the Hitman series as a whole.

[Warning: Spoilers for Hitman 3 below]

Hitman 3 picks up directly after the last downloadable mission for Hitman 2 ends, with Agent 47 and Lucas Grey having determined the new identities and locations of the Partners and Diana working behind-the-scenes to determine how (and where to) The Constant escaped. The first few missions in Hitman 3, Dubai and Dartmoor, are all about eliminating these last few loose ends. After that has been completed, however, things begin to get serious.

The Constant approaches Diana and offers to make her one of the new Partners. Diana accepts, clearly with ulterior motives, and meets with Agent 47 on the outskirts of a winery to discuss their plan. The two of them work in tandem for one last series of assassinations, and then, after sharing a tango on the terrace, Diana tells 47 to meet her in a nearby olive grove.

Diana then betrays Agent 47, disabling him and allowing him to be captured by The Constant’s team. Diana tells Agent 47 that she is sorry, and that she doesn’t completely blame him for killing her parents (a contract which was previously unknown to her). As Agent 47 fades out of consciousness, Diana tells him “people aren’t meant to be controlled” and that “this is a kindness.

When Agent 47 awakens, he finds himself in a lab located on a train speeding through the snowy mountains. He works his way to the front of the train, dealing with a number of guards and technicians along the way, and eventually confronts The Constant. To his credit, The Constant seems to know his end is coming, and doesn’t offer much in the way of resistance to 47. Speaking of Diana before dying, The Constant asks “Do you really think she’ll be able to resist all that power?” 47 answers, “She rejects the power. Not the responsibility.

While Diana was undoubtably upset to learn Agent 47 was the one who murdered her parents, she is also professional enough to put that aside in order to complete her actual goal: becoming The Constant herself. Appearing to betray 47 was the only way she could accomplish that. As resignations from top oil and industrial companies roll in on the news, Diana burns the evidence of 47’s crimes and all attachments to their previous investigations. One year after Agent 47 eliminates The Constant, the titular Hitman can be found in the middle of a snowy forest, alone.

Well, not entirely alone. As he enters a small cabin and picks up a phone, it’s clear Agent 47 has decided to not leave the World of Assassination completely behind. Speaking into the receiver, 47 states “I choose this path because I can. There will always be people like them. So there will always be people like us.” On the other end of the line, players can hear Diana’s response, one which echoes the entire ethos of her character: “No one is untouchable.” 47 smiles, gazing out into the distance, and says “It’s good to be back.

Hitman 3 ends the story of Lucas Grey, the Partners, and The Constant, and gives much more depth and humanity to Diana’s relationship with Agent 47. While it’s unclear the extent of just how much 47 knew about Diana’s plans, they rejoin at the end as not just a handler and a tool, but as partners. Wherever the Hitman series decides to go next, by the end of Hitman 3 Agent 47 and Diana’s bond has never been better.
