Hidden Percy Jackson Detail Confirms Season 2 Will Make Poseidon’s Biggest Lie Worse

Hidden Percy Jackson Detail Confirms Season 2 Will Make Poseidon’s Biggest Lie Worse

WARNING! This article contains spoilers for Percy Jackson and the Olympians episodes 1 & 2, as well as Rick Riordan’s book, The Sea of Monsters!

A hidden Easter egg in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 1 sets up the arrival of a season 2 character, who will make Poseidon’s lies about his children even worse. At the end of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 2, the titular demigod (played by Walker Scobell) discovers that he is the son of Poseidon, who officially claims him after 12 years. As a son of one of the “Big Three” Greek gods (Poseidon, Zeus, and Hades), Percy is especially endangered due to his status as a “forbidden child,” as the deities made a pact to never sire children after World War II. However, Percy isn’t the only forbidden child in the series, nor the only son of Poseidon.

Percy’s loneliness and struggles with the effects of being a demigod – though unbeknownst to him until episode 1’s ending – are shown through flashbacks of the character at school. Not only was he dyslexic as a result of his mind’s preference of Ancient Greek, but he also had recurring visions and was able to see glimpses of mythological creatures and objects from his future. The opening scenes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 1 feature Easter eggs in Percy’s drawing of a variety of mythological figures, teasing future storylines such as episode 2’s Minotaur, his upcoming run-in with Medusa, and a family member who is expected to be introduced in season 2.

Percy Jackson’s Cyclops Drawing Teases His Half-Brother Tyson In Sea Of Monsters

Hidden Percy Jackson Detail Confirms Season 2 Will Make Poseidon’s Biggest Lie Worse

Among the Greek mythological species in Percy Jackson’s notebook drawings is a cyclops. While this creature isn’t expected to play a role in Disney’s adaptation of The Lightning Thief book, cyclops do play an extremely important part in the series’ second novel, The Sea of Monsters. One cyclops, in particular, is integral to Percy’s journey, as he is introduced to his younger half-brother Tyson, another forbidden son of Poseidon. Tyson is the fson of Poseidon and a nymph, who was originally one of the homeless cyclopses living between the alleys of New York City and other metropolises.

In The Sea of Monsters book, which will presumably be the basis of Percy Jackson season 2, Percy meets Tyson as a classmate at Meriwether College Prep, where Percy soon grows into a close friend and protector of the bullied cyclops. However, it isn’t until Percy brings Tyson to Camp Half-Blood and the cyclops is claimed by Poseidon that he discovers they’re half-brothers, leading to an increasingly complex relationship between the two young characters. Tyson ultimately becomes an important and frequent character in the titular demigod’s story, so Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 1 teasing his role makes for an especially exciting Easter egg.

Tyson Makes Poseidon’s Abandonment Of Percy Even Worse

While all the Big Three have broken the pact to not have children, Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ story often tries to situate Poseidon as the most redeemable of the brothers. However, even after he claims Percy, attempts to reach out to him, and shows his love in a redemptive arc, the impact is minimized by the reveal that Percy wasn’t the only child he had abandoned. Tyson was also abandoned and relentlessly teased throughout his childhood, being utterly alone until Percy found him. Poseidon keeping Percy’s birth a secret and essentially ignoring him was already unforgivable, but knowing that the god also did this to another young “forbidden child” after Percy is even worse.
