Hidden Loki Details Make Marvel’s Genocidal Multiverse Villains Even Worse

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Loki season 2, episode 1, “Ouroboros.”

Hidden details in Loki season 2, episode 1, “Ouroboros,” have revealed that the Time Variance Authority is guilty of far more than simply pruning branching timelines in the MCU. Two years since the release of Loki season 1 on Disney+, season 2 finally premiered on October 5, 2023, bringing Tom Hiddleston’s beloved God of Mischief back to the MCU, and introducing new problems for Loki and the TVA. After Loki season 1’s finale saw He Who Remains killed, the multiverse unleashed, and the truth of the TVA revealed to its workers, Loki season 2, episode 1 revealed new details that suggest the TVA are even more menacing than previously thought.

Loki season 2’s premiere episode uncovered many new details about the Time Variance Authority, after season 1 only scratched the surface of what the organization actually does. The rank of General was introduced with Kate Dickie’s General Dox, the fact that He Who Remains had continuously been wiping the TVA workers’ memories was revealed, and Ke Huy Quan’s Ouroboros, a.k.a. OB, explained the mysterious Temporal Loom to Loki and Mobius. However, many hidden details were also featured throughout Loki season 2, episode 1, which bring the working conditions and staff treatment at the TVA into terrifying focus.

Hidden Loki Details Make Marvel’s Genocidal Multiverse Villains Even Worse

After Loki and Mobius reunite and address high-ranking TVA officials in the War Room, revealing the truth about He Who Remains, the pair make their way to Ouroboros in the Repairs and Advancement Department. On this journey, they pass a sign that reveals a tragic truth about the TVA’s working conditions, reading, “Minimize Chit-Chat in the Cafeteria Please. Limit Your Lunch Break to 17 Minutes.” This sign suggests that, as well as being established by a dictator figure, and spending millennia brainwashing captured variants, wiping their memories, and obliterating their timelines, the TVA also fosters a negative working environment. Ke Huy Quan’s MCU debut only makes this even more evident.

OB’s Hidden Tragedy Reveals The TVA Are Monsters

As the tech-based mind behind a lot of the equipment in the TVA, Ouroboros is one of the organization’s most crucial figures, and yet he is known by only a few. Due to his importance, OB’s memory hadn’t been wiped in Loki season 2, meaning he was able to help Loki and Mobius from two different timelines during episode 1, eponymously titled “Ouroboros.” However, these two scenes featuring OB in two separate times hint at a greater problem with the TVA’s working conditions, as the Repairs and Advancement Department looked exactly the same in both timelines, except for one detail – OB’s Sprite machine had been removed in the present.

Ouroboros had been working in the Repairs and Advancement Department for centuries, so his Sprite machine was perhaps a welcome luxury. He noted that Mobius last visited him roughly 400 years ago, but stressed that he hadn’t had a single break in that time, and doesn’t even sleep. OB’s Sprite machine may have been his only saving grace, though he is perhaps happy to be free from his office and helping Loki and Mobius in Loki season 2’s premiere. One thing’s for sure, with the working conditions at the TVA being so poor, its staff should follow in the footsteps of real-world actors, writers, and VFX workers, and unionize.

New episodes of Loki release every Thursday at 6pm PT / 9pm ET on Disney+.
