“Hey, I Casually Gave Up The Galaxy For You”: Ahsoka’s Stars Discuss Ezra & Sabine’s Controversial & Understated Reunion

The actors for Ezra Bridger and Sabine Wren in Ahsoka have finally addressed the controversial reunion between the two characters showcased in the show. Interestingly, the story for Ahsoka season 2 may call for yet another reunion between the characters that will need to be more emotional to forgo the criticism faced from the same situation in Ahsoka season 1. At the end of Ahsoka episode 6, Sabine Wren finally finds Ezra Bridger after almost 10 years and traveling across galaxies, yet their meeting was noticeably understated, coming under fire from longtime fans who wished for a more touching meeting.

Ahsoka Show Cast & Star Wars Character Guide

Star Wars Celebration 2023 revealed the first trailer for the upcoming Ahsoka series, featuring many of the show’s characters and respective cast.

Recently, Eman Esfandi and Natasha Liu Boridzzo who play Ezra and Sabine respectively have commented on the moment at the Ahsoka panel during Los Angeles Comic Con 2023, via See Rad. According to the duo, the exact nature of Sabine and Ezra’s reunion was discussed on set. Here is what Esfandi and Bordizzo had to say about Ahsoka‘s low-key Star Wars reunion:

Natasha Liu Bordizzo: “It was funny, ’cause on the day we sort of discussed it. We were like, what does feel right? It’s almost such an epic moment you want to cry and run to the person, but then at the end of the day you just have to do what comes out naturally as Sabine and Ezra. They’re just old friends who would be like, ‘Hey, I casually gave up the galaxy to find you, but hey!'”

Eman Esfandi: “No questions asked. ‘Say, what’s up dude, thanks for finding me.’ It was very organic.”

Natasha: “It’s very Star Wars, the casual nature of something that should be so much more serious I think.”

According to the actors, it was quickly settled that the reunion would try to emulate the easy-going, sibling dynamic between the two that was always showcased in Star Wars Rebels. This dynamic will likely continue in upcoming Star Wars TV shows should the two meet again after Sabine was left stranded on Peridea while Ezra returned to the main galaxy of the franchise.

Was The Understated Ezra/Sabine Reunion The Right Choice?

Ezra Bridger and Sabine Wren in Ahsoka Episode 7

Despite the comments from Bordizzo and Esfandi, the understated reunion of Ezra and Sabine may not have been the correct choice. For one, the entire crux of Sabine’s storyline centered on finding Ezra. From learning the ways of the Force and training under Ahsoka to betraying her master, everything Sabine did was driven by her desire to find Ezra. However, the understated reunion of the two did not sell this idea. A more emotional, heartfelt meeting between the two would have sold this story and paid it off incredibly well.

Secondly, while it is admirable for Dave Filoni, Eman Esfandi, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo to want to continue the feel of the characters from Star Wars Rebels, it remains the case that people change over time. It has been almost a decade in-universe since Ezra and Sabine last saw each other and both have drastically changed as a result. Growing older would have been a good reason for the two to show more of an emotional side with one another rather than the easy option of continuing the more youthful sibling dynamic as it was presented in Ahsoka.
