Hermann’s Chicago Fire Season 12 Premiere Fate & Its Impact On Firehouse 51 Explained By EP

Hermann’s fate after the events of the Chicago Fire season 12 premiere will have future ramifications, co-showrunner Andrea Newman teases. One Chicago officially returns after an extended hiatus due to the dual Hollywood strikes of 2023. Aside from tackling the cliffhangers left by the Chicago Fire season 11 finale, it also introduced new storylines that will impact the rest of season 12.

One of the bigger new arcs in Chicago Fire season 12 is Hermann’s state after his heroic save from an arsonist. On the heels of the foiled bombing, it appears as if he’s unscathed, but later on, is found by Ritter seemingly still shaken by what happened to him. Talking to TV Insider, Newman reveals that there’s more to Hermann’s situation. Read her full quote below:

“Change is the theme of the season, and Herrmann has his own upheaval both mentally and physically coming off that heroic save. The question is, can Ritter get him to confront the truth of his struggles, or will Herrmann end up getting himself or someone else hurt by not dealing with it? And how will that dynamic affect the Herrmann/Ritter relationship going forward? Wait, who’s asking the questions here???”

Between the nature of their jobs and how long the show is on the air, Chicago Fire has seen its fair share of character exits and entrances. Admittedly, it is disappointing to see established characters go, but it allows One Chicago to keep things fresh and interesting with new characters, resulting in new stories to tell. That said, Chicago Fire season 12 already has few exits, with Gallo already bidding farewell and Brett set to follow. Meanwhile, there are theories that Severide will also leave Firehouse 51.

Considering all of these factors, it’s safe to say that Hermann will stay at Firehouse 51, at least throughout Chicago Fire season 12. That being said, his journey from here on out won’t be easy. With Mouch now officially out of the woods, the other veteran member of Chief Boden’s squad going through a near-death experience may be too much. However, the way they set up his future arc makes sense for a firefighter; what will make this story intriguing is the way it will impact the rest of his squadmates.
