In a game with as much to do as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it can seem like finding all the Great Fairies could be a waste of time and Rupees, but it’s actually not. These Great Fairies of Hyrule have faded into legends told by travelers, yet they do still exist. Hiding away in large closed-up flowers, they seem to appreciate their solitude and will not reveal themselves unless persuaded. For Link, finding them can help aid him in his quest if he’s willing to pay.
Cotera, Kayasa, Mija, and Tera are the four Great Fairies of Hyrule. They are some of the best Great Fairies in the Zelda series, but choose to keep themselves hidden away pretty well. Upon finding them, Link may not even know who is within the flowers requesting money from him. While it is hard to imagine what these reclusive Great Fairies need all this money for, they do in fact give a pretty good exchange by helping Link upgrade his armor.
BOTW’s Great Fairies Are Used To Fully Upgrade Armor
Each of the Great Fairies needs a few more Rupees than the last to emerge from their flower shells. Once Link has paid off the mysterious voice inside the flower, the Great Fairy inside will reveal herself and a beautiful fairy fountain. The Great Fairies then offer to enhance Link’s armor, provided he has the right materials for the job. Each consecutive Great Fairy raises the armor level by one and adds a star to the armor to show it has been upgraded.
These armor boosts can help players with everything they need to finish in BOTW, as building up those defenses can be very important when facing difficult enemies. The armor in BOTW thankfully doesn’t break like the weapons do, however, there is not much difference in defensive powers in different armors. Ideally, a player can find the armor they like the best, and then visit the Great Fairies to raise its level and become as strong as possible.
There is one additional Great Fairy – The Horse God Malanya. While she does not upgrade Link’s armor, she is useful in bringing horses back from the dead, also for a cost. Each of these Great Fairies is optional and does not have to be found or paid off in order to beat the game, but having that armor bonus does make The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild that much more enjoyable.
