Disney Channel has been home to a variety of movies, and in 2018 it brought a musical movie very different from what the audience would expect from the Mouse House: Zombies. Its success led the studio to move forward with a sequel and a third movie was also announced, but when is Zombies 3 coming out? Disney has explored a variety of genres in its movies, TV shows, and TV movies for years, and when it comes to the movies that go straight to Disney Channel, there seems to be more creative freedom. Disney Channel has seen movies like High School Musical, Camp Rock, and Descendants, and more recently it explored a different style with a musical featuring zombies.
Directed by Paul Hoen and based on the pilot Zombies & Cheerleaders by David Light and Joseph Raso, Zombies (stylized Z-O-M-B-I-E-S) is set in the town of Seabrook, where 50 years back, an accident at the local Power Plant resulted in an explosion that caused half the population to turn into zombies. The government eventually developed bracelets for the zombies to keep them from craving brains, allowing zombies and humans to coexist. In the present day, zombie football player Zed (Milo Manheim) and human cheerleader Addison (Meg Donnelly), meet in high school and fall in love, but they also have to lead their respective groups to coexist with each other.
Zombies got a sequel, simply titled Zombies 2 (Z-O-M-B-I-E-S 2) in 2020, and brought Manheim and Donnelly back as Zed and Addison. This time, Zed, Addison, and the rest had to deal with werewolves, as many years ago, settlers fought off a group of these creatures for a moonstone they kept hidden underground. Back to the present day, the werewolves’ power-granting moonstone necklaces are losing their power, so they had to find the Great Alpha who would lead them to the moonstone. Zombies 2 was well-received by critics and viewers, which granted it a sequel, and so Zombies 3 was officially announced in March 2021 – but when will it be released?
Details on Zombies 3 have been scarce, but it’s known that Manheim and Donnelly will return to play Zed and Addison one final time and director Paul Hoen will also be back. The announcement of Zombies 3 didn’t include a release date, but it’s known that it will start filming in Toronto in May 2021, so fans can expect Zombies 3 to be released in early 2022, most likely in February as the previous movies came out on Valentine’s Day. Now, as for the plot for Zombies 3, and as the second movie introduced werewolves, there will be another very popular creature joining the humans, zombies, and werewolves: aliens. At the end of Zombies 2, a meteorite crashed in Seabrook, and the official synopsis for Zombies 3 reveals that “extraterrestrial beings appear around Seabrook, provoking something other than friendly competition”.
Fans of Disney’s Zombies have nothing to worry about as Zombies 3 is confirmed to happen and a synopsis has already been revealed, so they can have an idea of what to expect from Zed and Addison’s final adventure. The wait for it might seem a bit long, but there was also a two-year gap between the first movies, so it really isn’t something unusual.
