Henry Cavill’s upcoming spy movie Argylle will mimic this one James Bond tradition. Matthew Vaughn put a new spin on the spy movie genre with his 2014 action thriller Kingsman: The Secret Service, its sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle and its prequel The King’s Man. Now he’ll do it again with his latest creation Argylle, a comedy starring one-time 007 contender Henry Cavill as the title character.
As the Argylle release date nears, Vaughn is revealing tantalizing tidbits about the upcoming movie, including the news that it will mimic a James Bond tradition by featuring its own ballad from a famous singer. Via Deadline, Vaughn enlisted Argylle actor Ariana DeBose for the song “Get Up and Start Again,” written by Vaughn himself along with Lorna Balfe, Gary Barlow and Giles Martin. Vaughn calls DeBose his “muse” and says he wants to work with her again.
Vaughn Promises Argylle Will Destroy James Bond Tropes
Vaughn’s love of spy movie tropes is obvious from his Kingsman universe, but in Argylle the director is actually setting out to destroy some of those well-worn James Bond clichés. One trope in particular is set to be blown up by the new movie, as Vaughn revealed in a Vanity Fair interview last October:
As I said, I’m guilty of handsome spies with great haircuts and wonderfully cut suits. In reality, if you’re a spy, it’s a pretty dumb thing to do. You’re going to be the guy that gets noticed in the room. A good spy should be the person you least expect the spy to be. And that’s what this movie is all about. It’s like Roger Moore said about James Bond—what sort of spy walks into a room and everyone knows his name and what he likes to drink? It’s ridiculous. We’re having fun destroying these tropes.
Given the spoofy nature of Argylle, and Vaughn’s stated desire to destroy Bond tropes, it’s a fair guess that DeBose’s ballad will itself be a somewhat cheeky take on famous Bond themes, like Adele’s “Skyfall” and Shirley Bassey’s “Goldfinger.” The very presence of one-time aspiring 007 Cavill, sporting a ridiculous haircut, hints at the tone Vaughn is going for in his latest spy movie venture.
It’s yet to be seen whether Vaughn’s particular brand of Bond-subverting comedy will take off with audiences. But if Argylle does prove to be a hit, it’s likely there will be more movies coming featuring Cavill’s character, as Vaughn has already teased a connection between his latest film and his Kingsman universe.
