Screen Rant interviewed stars Henry Cavill and Sam Rockwell about making an original spy movie with Argylle. Cavill explained why he didn’t want to base his character on other famous spies, and Rockwell shared how dancing helped him learn the fight choreography. They also discussed a difficult stunt scene in the movie.

Henry Cavill & Sam Rockwell Talk Argylle

Screen Rant: They don’t make movies like this anymore, I feel. This is just a throwback. So many twists and turns, so much fun, and you guys are phenomenal in it. Sam, I hear that you had a shorthand with Matthew Vaughn where he would tell you, “More Jack Nicholson,” or, “More Bill Murray.” When you were creating this character, did you look at other iconic characters to influence Aidan?

Sam Rockwell: I’m always looking at stuff. I don’t know, I can’t speak for Henry, but I think we’ve all been influenced by stuff we grew up on. And so, in a way, you could say you’re preparing your whole life for roles like this by watching Harrison Ford and stuff like that.

Henry Cavill: And it shows. He’s fantastic in the movie.

You’re pretty solid too, Henry. Speaking of that, I love your character and your portrayal of Argylle. Did you draw inspiration from anywhere else? Maybe some of the past James Bonds. If so, which James Bond did you key into?

Henry Cavill: I didn’t specifically draw any inspiration from anywhere else. I think the line to walk on this one was Argylle, without spoiling too much. He takes himself very seriously because his situation is very much real and heart-attack serious in his head. But as far as the tone of the movie is concerned, you’re not taking Argylle too seriously, and so it’s a fine line to tread between the two. Otherwise, if you’re playing it too realistic and too naturalistic, then it sort of spoils the joke, so you have to play a very serious but heightened version of that for it to fit in the tone of the movie. That was really my focus.

Sam, you’ve got some killer dance moves in this, my friend. I hear that you dance on set just in general sometimes. Did your dance help you with any of the fight choreography at all?

Sam Rockwell: Absolutely, and sometimes you just dance to shake out the jitters on the first day when you’re nervous. We had an amazing dance team and stunt team, and you’re right, it’s very much like dance. I think Henry was picked for this too; really good fights. Stylized fights are very much like dance, with footwork and everything.

I want to talk about that train scene because not only is that a close-compact type of thing, but it’s f–king amazing. That train scene is incredible, and you guys had to mimic each other move for move. Can you talk about the difficulty? Because it seems seamless.

Sam Rockwell: Yeah, it is difficult. They did a great job. Bullet Train was really well done, and we worked really hard on this. We were in synchronicity. We were doing the same moves, but we were doing them slightly differently.

Henry Cavill: Yeah. It was about working on a new technique; a completely innovative technique, and trying to make that concept real. Which was tricky because we also had to keep our own characters separate. It just took a lot of practice and watching each other and going, “Okay, well, if you’re going to do it like that, the shot’s not going to work if I do it like this.” Whichever one was going to adjust slightly, we adjusted, and it was fun. It was fun.

Sam Rockwell: Yeah, it was really fun.

Henry Cavill: It was very good. It was interesting having a dance partner who’s not there with you in the moment because it just made things slightly different.

Sam Rockwell: Yeah, and it took the burden off the fight in a way, because it wasn’t all on one person. We were sharing the responsibility of the fight.
