“He Seems Nice”: Community Star Responds To Chevy Chase’s Brutal Remarks About Show

Community star Yvette Nicole Brown responds after her former costar, Chevy Chase, slammed the series. First airing in 2009, Dan Harmon’s sitcom chronicled the daily adventures of a group of misfits at Greendale Community College. Chase appeared in the show as Pierce Hawthorne, a bigoted business tycoon, departing after season 4 following on-set tensions.

Recently, while appearing on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, Chase shared some brutal remarks about Community, saying it “wasn’t funny enough for me,” before adding that he “didn’t want to be surrounded by that table, every day, with those people.” Brown, who played the God-fearing Shirley on the series, responded to a Deadline article covering Chase’s comments, keeping her thoughts short and sweet. Check out her tweet below:

He seems nice,” the actor writes, following the message with a laughing emoji. A user then responds to her post, asking whether she has any plans on discussing her time with Chase on the show.

Never have. Probably never will,” she replies, suggesting that those who enjoy the series shouldn’t expect her to be sharing any juicy behind-the-scenes stories about Chase.

Community may have earned itself a passionate fanbase, but the show has rarely had a smooth go of things. Ratings were always a struggle for the series, but, later on in its life, behind-the-scenes issues started to emerge as well. The main issue, it seems, was tension between Chase and Harmon, which stemmed from the former’s dislike of various creative decisions.

Chase, it was reported, had a frustratingly minimal presence on set, forcing scenes to be shot around his absences. There is also one instance during season 3 in which the star is reported to have walked off set after deeming one scene not funny. The issues between Chase and Harmon came to a head during the season 3 wrap party when the creator directly called the actor out in front of the cast and crew. Harmon was fired and replaced for Community season 4 (and would eventually return for season 5), but the Chase issues didn’t end there.

During the filming of one season 4 episode, Chase is said to have been so frustrated with the direction of his character that he uttered a racial slur. After reaching a mutual decision with NBC, Chase departed the show, with his costars later speaking out about his poor behavior and suggesting that he was never really happy being on the show. With a Community movie now in the works, it doesn’t sound like audiences should expect Chase to return in any capacity.
