Warning: contains spoilers for Masters of the Universe: Forge of Destiny #3!He-Man’s untold origin story has revealed that one of Skeletor’s servants actually began as a hero. Dark Horse Comics’ Masters of the Universe: Forge of Destiny has taken a “Year One” approach to the He-Man mythos, revealing the true origins of the character and his many allies, and as seen in issue three, his villains as well, and one of them began as a hero.

Masters of the Universe: Forge of Destiny #3 is written by Tim Seeley and drawn by Eddie Nunez. Skeletor is on the island nation of Anwat Gar, ready to seize its power when he is suddenly knocked over by an energy bolt. Skeletor pulls himself up, just as a grappling hook wraps itself around a pole. Even fazed, Skeletor still has the strength to pull on the rope, revealing Webstor was behind the attack.

Skeletor calls Webstor by name, referring to him as an assassin in the service of King Randor. He then chucks a shocked Webstor off the top of a tower.

Webstor Is a Shadowy, Mysterious Ally of Skeletor

The dark, spider-like Webstor, at least in every other incarnation of the franchise, is a servant of Skeletor. First released in 1984, Webstor was billed as “a Master of Escape.” Webstor made a few token appearances in the 1980s Masters of the Universe cartoon, as well as its 2002 reboot, which depicted him as a mysterious being living deep in the bowels of Snake Mountain, who was recruited to the Council of Evil by Skeletor. Webstor is an integral part of the Masters of the Universe franchise, and now his origin is being revealed.

Forge of Destiny is rewriting the He-Man mythos with a number of stunning revelations about some of its most beloved characters, Webstor among them. Webstor clearly has a reputation, as Skeletor immediately recognized him and knew he was working for Randor. In some incarnations of the franchise, Webstor was a free agent who merely allied with Skeletor, and this issue seems to confirm that he is only working for the good guys. He seemed confused when Skeletor accused him of working with Randor, perhaps meaning Webstor is actually not in his employ. If this is the case, then it opens the door for Webstor to eventually join Skeletor.

Webstor Could Become a Tragic Figure Because of He-Man

Webstor Masters of the Universe Villain

Yet if it is not, and Webstor begins with good intentions, then he immediately becomes one of the most tragic figures in He-Man’s universe. It also leads fans to wonder what happened to cause Webstor to switch alliances. It may very well be owed to his mercenary nature, but perhaps Randor and He-Man slight Webstor in some way. In such a fashion that he never recovers, leading to him joining Skeletor’s forces. Forge of Destiny has explored He-Man’s impact on those around him, and facilitating Webstor’s path to villainy would make for some good stories, and serve as a reminder to do better.
