Although competing with the return of wide theatrical releases, HBO Max is maintaining relevance as the streaming service adds a great selection of movies and TV shows in September 2021. Considering HBO has the rights to films and shows from Warner Bros., Adult Swim, Turner Classic Movies and the DCEU, HBO Max has no shortage of must-see titles. Although certain titles come and go depending on deals with alternate services or release schedules, HBO Max always has their own original series and streaming-only films on the catalog too.
The August 2021 HBO Max catalog featured several exciting additions, including James Gunn’s acclaimed The Suicide Squad, which also shared a dual theatrical release. Max’s service also brought on Titans season 3 and the debut of Hugh Jackman’s movie Reminiscence for August. Additionally, it also featured the mid-season finale for original reboot series, Gossip Girl, which won’t return for part 2 until November.
The Harry Potter franchise is making its long-anticipated return to HBO Max on September 1; all 8 movies will appear, though not with Fantastic Beasts. Some other significant blockbuster additions are Mad Max: Fury Road (September 9), 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot (September 9), and the 2020 Academy Award-winning Promising Young Woman (September 25). A few more HBO Max original series titles to look out for including the Sweet Life: Los Angeles season finale (September 2), Little Ellen series premiere (September 13) and the season 3 premiere of Doom Patrol (September 23). Max will also feature the September 10 premiere of James Wan’s new horror movie Malignant and the September 17 release of Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho.

While the selection for September 2021 is exciting, the month also means the departure of several movies and TV shows from HBO Max. For those who want to give James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad a streaming rewatch, they better do so before September 5. Titles also leaving include Doctor Sleep (September 20), Jerry Maguire (September 30), the Scary Movie series (September 30), and the Scream movie franchise (September 30). Reminiscence will also be exiting on September 19 after its allotted streaming period. Following the new slate of September additions, HBO Max subscribers can look forward to the debuts of The Many Saints of Newark (October 1) and Dune (October 22).
