Harry Potter: 10 Underrated Characters, According To Reddit

From the Golden trio to professors like Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape to the main antagonist Voldemort, the Harry Potter franchise has some of the most iconic characters in pop culture who are beloved by millions. Potterheads are a passionate lot who all have their favorite characters, but there are some characters who have not gotten the appreciation they deserve.

Many Potter fans have taken to Reddit to give their opinion on characters who, in one way or another, have not gotten rated properly by other fans, not receiving the level of love or attention that is often handed to the likes of the Marauders.

Colin Creevey

Harry Potter: 10 Underrated Characters, According To Reddit

Colin Creevey may be best known to general fans as the young Gryffindor photographer who got petrified by the Basilisk in The Chamber Of Secrets. He is an underrated character to fans like Redditor pretty-in-pink and others.

They talk about how not only is his death in The Deathly Hallows great but that in The Chamber Of Secrets, he is “he really is the perfect representation of the HP fandom.” He may not be the most recognizable character, but that plays perfectly into the argument that he is an underrated side character.

Dr. & Dr. Granger

Other than a quick glimpse, a few mentions, and finally a heartbreaking scene in which their memories get erased, Hermione’s parents are scarcely in the Potter films but are seen as underrated by the likes of Redditor crayonbox.

They talk about how the two went through a lot and were never even given names, finishing their argument off by saying, “I always kinda felt bad for them. And in the books, they are kinda seen as an afterthought.” There is no doubt the two do not get the spotlight shone on them a lot by fans or creators, so they may well be two of the most underrated parents/parental figures in the saga.

Kingsley Shacklebolt

Kingsley Shacklebolt, as a powerful member of the second Order of the Phoenix, gets a good few moments to shine throughout Harry Potter, but some Potterheads like Redditor thirdrate3 feel he does not get the credit he deserves.

They not only talk about how talented Kingsley is but state that “Even though he ends up becoming minister, I feel people tend to forget him.” Kingsley has some fantastic moments and accomplishments but is rarely spoken about on the level of other allies of Dumbledore, and he probably should.

Fleur Delacour

The once attendee of Beaubatons turned wife of Bill Weasley Fleur Delacour is not the franchises best character, but perhaps does not get enough appreciation, which is what Redditor tiaradactyl believes.

Speaking on the character, they state, “She’s far from my favorite character, but I really think she’s got class and gut.” In being a Triwizard champion and struggling both with the Weasley’s and with Death Eaters, Fleur goes through quite a bit in the franchise but never gets deterred. This is admirable and perhaps should earn her more love than what she gets.

Horace Slughorn

Horace Slughorn is arguably one of the best Hogwarts professors in the films and did his duty brilliantly in the Battle of Hogwarts, being a key example of a Slytherin who did not turn evil. Redditors like elspethgordie21 believe he is underrated.

Replying to the question of the most underrated character, they simply state, “I love Slughorn, he cracks me up.” Slughorn has a couple of hilarious quotes in Harry Potter and is a hugely important character in discovering Voldemort’s dark secret. He may not be a saint of a person or a groundbreakingly brilliant character, but he may well be an underrated one.

Susan Bones

For film fans, Susan Bones is best known as the young student sorted into Hufflepuff at the start of The Philosopher’s Stone. However, she is far more than that to others, including Redditor roxie1835.

They call her “the definition of a badass Hufflepuff” after speaking about what she went through and how hard she fought. Many fans do not know about the loss of her family at the hands of Voldemort or how she fought with Dumbledore’s Army. She fought despite knowing the risks all too well, proving herself as one of the bravest Hufflepuffs, which is more than enough to earn the respect of Potterheads.

Cedric Diggory

Cedric Diggory is a crucial character in The Goblet Of Fire. However, despite his significant role in that film/book, some Potterheads believe he is underrated, including Redditor SecondSilencer.

They state, “He gives Hufflepuff the good name it deserves.” At least forty-eight Potterheads agree that he is underrated as they upvoted their comment, and it is easy to see why Hufflepuffs especially feel as though this heroic character who met such a tragic end deserves more appreciation. He may well be the best on-screen Hufflepuff fans have met thus far.

Madam Poppy Pomfrey

As the only medical Witch or Wizard at Hogwarts, Madam Poppy Pomfrey sees a lot of stuff in her life, scarcely getting the credit she deserves, seen as underrated by a few Potterheads such as Redditor shishigami_.

They list some of the stuff she has to deal with (including the petrified students, the students punished by the Carrows, and all the ailments of the Golden Trio) and says, “She does all this (mostly) by herself, and she always knows what to do, and what the best course of action is.” This argument is wildly convincing, and Madam Pomfrey deserves far more respect than she has received.

Regulus Black

The Black family portrait in Harry Potter

Sirius Black could very well be the most popular character amongst hardcore Potterheads, but his brother Regulus has his own story, which is viewed as underappreciated by many, like one deleted Redditor.

They call him the most underrated character in the saga, talking about his failure yet bravery as a Death Eater and his great story, and ask, “Seriously, where’s all the Regulus love!?” The importance of the character does not get talked about enough, nor does his fascinating journey as a part of the famous House of Black, a journey that rivals that of Sirius himself.

Harry Potter

It may seem silly to deem the titular character of one of the world’s biggest franchises as underrated, but many fans on Reddit feel as though that is the case, including abbylynne and a few others who comment below theirs.

They claim, “When you ask a Potterhead who their favorite character is, there is a very large chance that someone is going to be Lupin/Sirius/Luna/Hermione/Neville/Draco. Poor Harry gets almost no one.” That is a fair point. Most of the more dedicated fans have a favorite character who aids in Harry’s journey but who are not Harry. He may get the most attention in the films and books and may be the protagonist, but he is definitely overlooked by many fans of the Wizarding World.
