Rubeus Hagrid is easily one of the best characters in the Harry Potter series. He is a great friend to Harry, Ron, and Hermione. He is also extremely loyal to Albus Dumbledore and genuinely cares about the people he befriends.
Hagrid may not be the most skilled of wizards due to his magical education getting cut short, but he has faced a lot of prejudice in his life because of his half-giant heritage. He strives to be a good person despite being frequently faced with the ugliness of the world. Odds are, if you’re a Potter fan, you’re also a Hagrid fan. One of the things we love most about Hagrid is his quirks, and many of them manifest in his costumes.
Hagrid’s Overcoat Is Made Out Of Moleskin
Moleskin fabric is not actually made out of a mole’s skin as the name implies. It is instead comprised of a heavy cotton fabric that does feel similar to the skin of a mole, hence how it gets its name. That said, it is extremely durable and yet also feels soft to the touch.
Hagrid’s iconic overcoat full of pockets is made out of moleskin. He is wearing this coat when he meets Harry for the first time out in the middle of the ocean at the hut with the Dursley’s. It’s one of his favorite coats.
J.K. Rowling Implies That Hagrid’s Coat Has Magical Power
It is frequently implied throughout the series that Hagrid may have some latent abilities or at least might be benefitting from certain illegal charms. Hagrid’s coat could be part of that equation due to the fact it is able to contain way more stuff than any one person should be able to carry around.
That’s not the only reason either, the way Rowling describes the coat in the books, particularly the first book, makes it seem like it has an aura of mystery around it. It’s almost like a protective layer around Hagrid that keeps him impervious to certain spells and charms, although this is never proven.
Hagrid Has Several Overcoats In The Movies
Hagrid has one main coat in both the books and movies, the moleskin overcoat, but in terms of production, Hagrid actually has several. Costume designers generally always create several versions of a costume, especially if it’s something the character will wear frequently, in case something happens to one version.
This way they always have a back-up. That said, Hagrid also does have several different outfits including large sweaters, leather vests, and coats in different styles. The books don’t describe his day-to-day wear that often, unless it’s a special occasion, but the movies tend to change it up now and then.
Hagrid’s Coat Is Somehow Capable Of Keeping Creatures Alive
The first time that Harry meets Hagrid, he finds himself fascinated by the moleskin overcoat. Anyone would be, considering how many pockets his coat is said to have.
Perhaps one of the most extraordinary things about Hagrid’s overcoat (and one that lends itself to the magic theory) is that he can keep several live animals from suffocating within its many pocketed confines. He pulls out at least one live owl and several dormice during he and Harry’s first meeting, and for all we know, there could be more within.
Hagrid’s Coat Might Have An Extension Charm On It
To continue on the note that Hagrid’s coat could potentially have magical powers that can keep animals alive and increase storage space, there is a very good chance that Hagrid’s moleskin overcoat has an extension charm cast on it.
We know that these charms can be used to great effect, as evidenced when Hermione cast an extension charm on her bag during the seventh book. It’s quite possible that Hagrid could have gotten someone to do it for him or that he did enchant the coat himself.
Hagrid Has Never Cut His Beard In The Series (That We Know Of)
One of the most notable things about Hagrid’s appearance is his wild and untameable beard. As far as we know, Hagrid doesn’t do much in the way of grooming his facial hair. In the films, his beard generally remains the same length throughout and always appears rather tangled and unkempt.
It’s a familiar part of him and if he were to shave it off he would probably look very different. We’ve seen Hagrid slick his hair back, but neither the books or films ever show Hagrid actively grooming it or even trimming it.
What Is Inside Of Hagrid’s Pink Umbrella
Harry theorizes early on that Hagrid stashed the broken portions of his wand inside of a pink umbrella that he always carries with him. At one point, he is seen clenching it tightly after Ollivander alludes to this fact. We also know that he can indeed perform magic from the umbrella as it is shown on multiple occasions.
However, we have no definitive proof that Hagrid does have his broken wand inside. We’ve seen Ron try to operate a broken wand to disastrous results. Is it truly possible that Hagrid could be using one after all this time? We never get to see what’s inside the umbrella so that’s one mystery that will remain.
Hagrid Prefers A Bearskin Coat When Hunting
While hunting, Hagrid typically wears a bearskin coat instead of his traditional moleskin. Bearskin is denser and will likely keep the wearer warmer than moleskin does.
It makes sense that Hagrid would want to wear bearskin while trekking into the woods because of this, but also because he might be more likely to blend into his surroundings if he appears like a grizzly bear. Considering his size, it is possible.
Hagrid Has No Problem Wearing Feminine Clothes Or Adornments
Despite Hagrid’s tremendous size and his occasional ferocity, he is generally a very kind-hearted man. Even though he looks like he might be very burly and masculine, Hagrid actually enjoys wearing feminine items from time to time.
When he gets cleaned up he likes to wear flower lapels and even in the film he wears a bright yellow polka-dotted tie while attending the hearing for Buckbeak.
Hagrid Likes Flowers And Frequently Wears Them
Speaking of flowers, Hagrid really likes them. In the films, his umbrella looks like an ordinary pink umbrella but it is actually described as being “flowery” in the books.
Hagrid also wears a flowery apron while he cooks, and he even plucked a giant orange flower to create a makeshift boutonniere for himself while trying to impress Madame Maxine during the Yule Ball.
