Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Halo season 2
Halo season 2 features a very subtle answer to a mystery regarding the Fall of Reach. A major tragedy in the timeline of the games and books in which the UNSU’s key colony world was decimated by the alien alliance known as the Covenant, it does seem as though Halo season 2 is building toward Reach’s destruction by the end of the season. To that end, a key Easter egg has seemingly answered a long-held question regarding one of the franchise’s most unique Spartan squads.
As seen in the Halo season 2 two-episode premiere, Master Chief John-117 (Pablo Schreiber) is struggling to convince his superiors of the Elite Sangheili forces he saw on the colony world of Sanctuary before it was glassed by Covenant forces. Likewise, the Chief grows increasingly concerned about Cobalt Team, another Spartan squad that was deployed without being warned about a potential Covenant presence. To that end, a new Halo Easter egg may help explain the whereabouts of Black Team during the imminent Fall of Reach.

When Halo Season 2’s Finale Is & How Many Episodes Are Left
Halo season 2 is now streaming on Paramount+, so here’s how many episodes are left and when the finale is set to release.
Black Team Wasn’t On Reach During The Fall Of Reach
The Halo Show Confirms They Were On Deployment

During Cobalt’s absence, John-117 is featured anxiously watching a board listing the statuses of various Spartan squads beyond his own Silver Team. As such, Cobalt’s deployment status being switched to “standby” is a definite cause for concern, prompting the Master Chief to investigate the squads’ whereabouts in defiance of the Spartan program’s new director, James Ackerson (Joseph Morgan). However, the board also reveals that Black Team is currently deployed on a mission.
While the timeline of the Halo show stands apart from the original timeline of the games and books, Black Team being off-world is the best answer yet to the question of where the fireteam was during Reach’s fall. A unique squad of Spartans with advanced matte-black armor, Black Team reported directly to the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) unlike their fellow Spartans. Having been active during the Human-Covenant War for several years, their absence from Reach during its destruction has always been curious. However, the idea that they were simply off-world on another mission for ONI makes perfect sense.

Gathering Intelligence for ONI?

It’s worth noting that Halo season 2 has confirmed that colony worlds are already being glassed ahead of Reach. To that end, perhaps ONI has Black Team deployed on a mission to investigate the Covenant’s movement. Furthermore, it’s also possbile that future connections to Black Team may yet be on the way in Halo season 2 considering Ackerson’s own ties to ONI before taking over the Spartan program from Doctor Catherine Halsey.

Halo
A live-action adaptation of the video game franchise of the same name, Halo follows Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 (Pablo Schrieber) as he fights his part in a war between humanity’s United Nations Space Command (UNSC) and the Covenant, an alliance of multiple hostile races of aliens intent on destroying the human race. The Master Chief is supported by Cortana (Jen Taylor) – an AI construct based on the personality of Dr. Catherine Halsey, who created the Spartan supersoldier program – implanted in his brain.
