Halo Season 2 Is Already Teasing A Major Event That Happens In Halo 5: Guardians

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Halo season 2

Halo season 2 is already teasing a major event from the Halo 5: Guardians video game. Although the show on Paramount+ does take place on its own timeline apart from the games and books, the overall continuity does seem to be heading in the same general direction during the Human-Covenant War. To that end, it does seem as though Halo season 2 has begun setting up a rather significant planet for the future of the franchise.

Halo season 2 has begun streaming on Paramount+ with a two-episode premiere, revealing the current status quo of Master Chief John-117 (Pablo Schreiber) and Silver Team in the wake of Halo season 1’s ending with the Battle of Raas Kkhotskha. It also confirms that the Covenant invasion of the UNSC’s stronghold world of Reach has already begun, setting up the Fall of Reach as seen in the original novels and games. However, Halo season 2 also seems to be setting up a major Halo 5 event with a reference to the natural satellite known as Meridian.

Halo Season 2’s Meridian Reference Teases Halo 5’s Story

Merdian Has A Forerunner Guardian Buried Under The Surface

Halo Season 2 Meridian Easter Egg

As seen in Halo season 2, episode 2, Master Chief’s investigation into the disappearance of Cobalt Team features a reference to the UNSC’s presence on the natural satellite of Meridian, a colony that ends up being partially “glassed” by the Covenant yet still perseveres nonetheless. Meridian ends up playing a pivotal role in the original Halo timeline with the reveal in Halo 5 that one of the Forerunners’ massive Guardians had long been buried beneath the surface.

Guardians were massive peacekeeping machines used by the Forerunners to maintain order in the ancient past. To that end, the Guardian on Merdian was reactivated during the AI uprising known as the Created which was led by none other than Cortana herself. This also resulted in a conflict between Master Chief’s Blue Team and Fireteam Osirus led by Spartan Jameson Locke. Osiris had been dispatched by the UNSC to bring in John-117 and his team after they’d gone rogue to find Cortana.

Meridian Was Set Up Early In The Halo Games Too

As Early As Halo: Reach

Assuming the Halo timelines continue to run parallel with each other as they have been, the events of Meridian during Halo 5 wouldn’t be happening on the show for another six years. However, it’s worth noting that Meridian was set up early in the games as well, having first been mentioned in Halo: Reach which covered the colony world’s fall at the hands of the Covenant. To that end, The Fall of Reach is the very same event that Halo season 2 clearly seems to be heading towards in its finale, creating some pretty entertaining symmetry with this new reference.

A live-action adaptation of the video game franchise of the same name, Halo follows Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 (Pablo Schrieber) as he fights his part in a war between humanity’s United Nations Space Command (UNSC) and the Covenant, an alliance of multiple hostile races of aliens intent on destroying the human race. The Master Chief is supported by Cortana (Jen Taylor) – an AI construct based on the personality of Dr. Catherine Halsey, who created the Spartan supersoldier program – implanted in his brain.
