Halloween: Laurie Strode Tangles With Michael Myers in First Images

40 year after John Carpenter’s seminal horror classic Halloween, Laurie Strode (played by Jamie Lee Curtis) and Michael Myers (played by both Nick Castle and newcomer James Jude Courtney) are facing off yet again. In the sequel’s first official images, Strode and Myers continue what they started all the way back in 1978 on Halloween night.

Having spent the last four decades awaiting Michael Myers’ return, Laurie Strode has since become not only a mother, but a grandmother. However, in that time, she has been prepared for the masked serial killer’s return. Now, with this upcoming sequel from director David Gordon Green ignoring all previous sequels in the franchise, Halloween (2018) will not only mark the final confrontation between Strode and Myers, but will serve as a direct follow-up to John Carpenter’s original movie. Also starring Judy Greer, Virginia Gardner, Will Patton, and Toby Huss –  and co-written by Green and Danny McBride – the first official images from the film showcase the elusive boogeyman in all his decrepit glory.

USA Today unveiled exclusive images from the upcoming sequel, showing off exactly how much the characters have changed since the first movie. While behind-the-scenes photos have already revealed how Strode and Myers will look this go-around, these official stills reveal them in action (specifically harmful action). In one photo, Strode is attempting to barricade her front door as Myers smashes his hand through a window (showing off some damage done to his forearm in the process).

In another photo, Myers is seen casually walking down a street in Haddonfield, Illinois.

Another photo showcases Myers standing inside a child’s closet, not only harkening back to his and Laurie’s famous “closet scene” from the original movie, but embracing his well-earned boogeyman reputation.

Apart from revisiting two classic horror movie characters, Halloween (2018) will also include some other modern touches. A British documentary crew plans on visiting Myers in prison, only to discover that he has escaped prison in order to find and kill Strode. It’s a unique way to “bring a modern audience into a 40-year-old movie,” as Curtis explained, and it fits in with the modern style of filmmaking present in many Blumhouse Productions movies, the studio behind the upcoming sequel. Blumhouse counts among its past hits movies like Paranormal Activity, The Purge, and this past year’s Academy Award winner for Best Original Screenplay Get Out.

As exciting as it to see images from the movie prior to the official trailer release on Friday, the most intriguing element from this sequel is easily the disregarding of all the sequels that were made in between. Though the sequels aren’t nearly as memorable as the original movie (nor were they as well received by critics), it will be interesting to see whether or not audiences will easily grasp the “alternate timeline” direction of the movie – especially considering that Strode died at Myers’ hands in 2002 installment Halloween: Resurrection.
