Halloween Kills Should Be Set The Same Day As The 2018 Reboot

Halloween 2 picked up the story right after the original ended, and Halloween Kills should take the same approach when following the 2018 reboot. Michael Myers’ resurrection and rejuvenation in 2018 was a long time coming. After ruling much of the 1980s, the Halloween franchise sat out most of the 1990s and 2000s, and what did end up getting produced was either utter crap or proved incredibly divisive among fans. Michael was due for a return to glory, and thankfully, director David Gordon Green gave him one.

Halloween 2018 wasn’t without flaws, but it’s pretty easily one of the best follow-ups to John Carpenter’s near-perfect original that’s ever been released, if not the absolute best. Halloween 2018 didn’t include any inexplicably abusive redneck stepdads, any ridiculous cults worshiping Michael, any rapper doing spinkicks, or any of the other laughably stupid elements that found their way into many of Halloween‘s later entries. Halloween 2018 set out to take the franchise back to basics, retconning all the other sequels along the way.

Next October sees the theatrical release of Halloween Kills, which Blumhouse mercifully decided not to call Halloween 2. It’s confusing enough having three horror movies called Halloween. Title aside, there’s no reason Halloween Kills shouldn’t have iconic killer Michael Myers get right down to business at the start of the film.

While Halloween 2018 effectively erased all the Halloween sequels and remakes from its continuity, that doesn’t change the fact that 1981’s Halloween 2 is a generally well-regarded slasher flick. It’s not nearly as good as Carpenter’s original, but few movies are. Halloween 2 provides fans more Laurie Strode, Michael Myers, and Dr. Loomis, and ups the ante on both kills and nudity. It’s best idea though was continuing the story mere minutes after the end of the original Halloween, which famously saw Michael get shot six times by Loomis and vanish.

This dramatic choice lent a sense of urgency to Halloween 2‘s entire plot, and if used correctly, could do the same for Halloween Kills. While Michael looked to be trapped in Laurie’s burning home at the end of Halloween 2018, preview footage has already revealed he’ll use brute force to bust out. After that, there’s zero reason for a delay in the plot progression. Michael should escape Laurie’s house, and immediately begin a new pursuit of her and her family. While Laurie’s no longer his sister, she is the one that got away from him, twice, and did just try to kill him, again. Michael’s got reason to be angry, and it makes no sense for him to stop and take a rest before embarking on another murder spree en route to catching up with his ultimate nemesis.
