Halloween Ends Producer Has Interest in Revisiting Season of the Witch

Halloween Ends producer Ryan Freimann shows interest in revisiting the story of Halloween III: Season of the Witch. Tommy Lee Wallace’s Halloween III: Season of the Witch was released in 1982, starring Tom Atkins, Stacey Nelkin, and Dan O’Herlihy. Released the year after Halloween II hit theaters, Halloween III was Universal’s one and only attempt to turn John Carpenter’s Halloween into an anthology series. The film was panned upon its release, leading to the franchise bringing back Michael Myers in 1988’s Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers.

Despite Halloween III: Season of the Witch doing poorly when it was first released, the film has since become a cult classic earning newfound appreciation from horror fans. The film isn’t part of any of the Halloween timelines. A trailer for Carpenter’s original movie is even shown in Season of the Witch, establishing that Halloween is an actual movie within this universe. Future Halloween installments ignored the events of the film, but Halloween and Halloween Kills both feature Silver Shamrock masks. The trailers for Halloween Kills show three victims slaughtered by Michael wearing the iconic skull, pumpkin, and witch masks.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch story isn’t expected to play a role in Halloween Kills, yet Freimann says there is interest in revisiting the movie. In an interview with Comicbook, Freimann talked about the franchise’s future after Halloween Ends. The producer says Universal’s current focus is getting Halloween Ends shot, but there is interest in exploring “outside areas of the Halloween universe.” Freimann’s full comment can be read below:

I think there are other ways and other mediums in which to explore this franchise. I wouldn’t necessarily say … I mean, there’s always interest in exploring Season of the Witch again. Is it something we’d race to do? I don’t know. Our focus has been COVID delays, figuring out how to do Halloween Ends and shoot it, COVID protocols on that, all of those things, coming out of that. That’s been our focus … But I think it would be something, where we explore other, outside areas of the Halloween universe. I think after this many films, too, we have to look other places, just to get a little more creative, right?”

Halloween Ends Producer Has Interest in Revisiting Season of the Witch

What’s interesting about Freimann’s comments is that they completely contradict what Jason Blum has said about the Halloween franchise. Blum has said he has no interest in turning Halloween into an anthology series following the conclusion of Halloween Ends. David Gordon Green won’t be making a fourth Halloween, meaning Halloween Ends will close out the Michael Myers and Laurie Strode saga. That being said, Michael Myers will likely return to big screens at some point. Being one of the biggest icons in the horror franchise, Michael Myers and the Halloween franchise are too popular for Universal to not capitalize on.

Even though Freimann says there is “always interest” in revisiting Halloween III: Season of the Witch‘s story, it does seem incredibly unlikely. Universal learned their lesson back in the ’80s, so if they were ever to decide to remake Season of the Witch, they probably wouldn’t promote it as a Halloween film. Or, Universal could attempt to write Michael Myers into Season of the Witch‘s story if they really wanted to remake the cult classic after Halloween Ends. There is currently no reason to believe Universal is actually developing a Halloween III: Season of the Witch remake, but seeing Silver Shamrock masks in Halloween Kills will at least be a fun easter egg for longtime fans.
