The two biggest loves of Spider-Man’s life have always been Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane, but Peter only went with Mary Jane after the unfortunate death of Gwen Stacy. This has led some fans to believe that Peter only “settled” for Mary Jane due to Gwen no longer being alive, but the latest iteration of the Ultimate Universe proves this couldn’t be more false.
The official preview for Ultimate Spider-Man #4 – by Jonathan Hickman and David Messina – further explores the ripple effects of Peter Parker becoming a superhero later in life, as the issue is set to introduce a version of Gwen Stacy who never died.
However, rather than a love interest for Peter, it seems Gwen will appear in a very different context. Moreover, this adds weight to the argument that Mary Jane is Peter’s one true love, as they appear to have a steadfast marriage in the Ultimate Universe.

Gwen was the first love of Peter Parker’s life and the death of Gwen Stacy is one of the most important and recognizable events in Spider-Man history. After this death, Peter would eventually gravitate towards Mary Jane, before falling in love with her as well. This led to a decades-long romance – among Marvel’s most iconic – despite the persistence of some fans believing that Peter only ended up with Mary Jane because Gwen was no longer an option. This is something Marvel, and Peter-MJ shippers, have repeatedly pushed back on over the years.
In Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe, even with Gwen Stacy alive, Peter still ends up with Mary Jane. Across the multiverse, Peter has ended up with Mary Jane more times than not. In Spider-Man: Renew our Vows, Peter has a loving marriage with Mary Jane and even has a daughter. The number of universes where Peter and MJ end up far outweighs the number of universes where Gwen and Peter are together. While Peter and Gwen made a wonderful couple, it doesn’t seem like their love is destined to last in the long run.

Peter Parker and Mary Jane are simply destined to be together. Their love was so dangerous that Mephisto specifically sought to erase it during the controversial One More Day storyline. While some fans will always prefer Gwen Stacy as an alternative for Peter Parker, it simply isn’t meant to be in the grand scheme of things. Though it is fun to imagine how Gwen and Peter’s relationship would’ve turned out, it seems, for one reason or another, Spider-Man was always going to end up with Mary Jane.
