Guillermo del Toro’s Sci-Fi Blockbuster Hits Netflix’s Top 10 Chart In US

Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim performs well on Netflix’s top 10 chart in the United States. Starring Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, and Charlie Day, Pacific Rim tells a story of a war that breaks out between humans and sea creatures, causing people to use special robot weapons. Del Toro is also known for directing a number of other films including Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

Now, Pacific Rim finds success years later as it makes it onto the Netflix chart in the United States. The film just barely made it onto the list, taking the no. 10 slot in the US for the week of January 29–February 4. Topping the list this week were The Postcard Killings and The Greatest Night in Pop. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (no. 4) made it onto the list for a tenth consecutive week.

Made on an estimated $190 million budget, Pacific Rim was a high-budget project for del Toro, who to that point had made mostly smaller films. The film turned this budget into a $411 million gross worldwide. Pacific Rim also fared decently among critics, scoring a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes. Pacific Rim had a sequel and a spinoff show, but neither was directed by del Toro.

Netflix’s animated series Pacific Rim: The Black is connected to the movie franchise, and here’s how it fits in the Pacific Rim timeline.

Pacific Rim became vital to del Toro’s Hollywood career. By its 2013 release, the director was already an Oscar nominee for Best Original Screenplay for Pan’s Labyrinth. Pacific Rim, however, brought del Toro into more recognition in the United States. He had previously directed two Hellboy films, though those were lower budget comparitively. It was this recognition that likely allowed him to make the oddball 2017 film The Shape of Water.

Taking on a completely different type of sea creature relationship, The Shape of Water ended up being immensely successful among critics. It was nominated for 13 Academy Awards, and won four, including a Best Director and Best Picture win for del Toro. Since then, the auteur director has also won Best Animated Feature for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. So, while Pacific Rim may not exactly be an art film, it helped pave the way for del Toro in realizing his visions.
