Guillermo del Toro has revealed his Jabba the Hutt movie would have been the “Scarface” of the Star Wars galaxy. The last few weeks have seen viewers learn a little more about Guillermo del Toro’s dream Star Wars movie, which would have featured Jabba the Hutt. This has previously been described as the Godfather of the Star Wars franchise, but sadly Lucasfilm passed on the project.

Speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, del Toro has gone into a little more detail about his idea for a Jabba the Hutt movie – which would presumably have been part of Lucasfilm’s canceled anthologies project. “I would love to do a Jabba the Hutt Scarface, his ascension in the crime family,” he explained. “I just love monsters, and Jabba is a) basically my same shirt size, and b) I love him, man.

Guillermo del Toro’s Jabba The Hutt Movie Doesn’t Sound To Have Ever Gotten Very Far

The Star Wars Anthologies Were Canceled

Lucasfilm’s anthology projects were intended as spinoffs that would add to the stories of the movies. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was a tremendous success, but the critical and box office failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story meant the whole range was canceled. Lucasfilm has since repurposed some for Disney+ TV shows, but it doesn’t seem likely they will do this with the Jabba pitch. Although some spinoffs sound as though they may yet return to the big screen – there has been positive news about Lando of late – this doesn’t seem to be a project Lucasfilm is interested in.

Still, del Toro is clearly enamored with Jabba the Hutt, and he’s continuing to speak openly about it – without going into too much detail. He’s clearly leaving Lucasfilm room to maneuver should they see a positive fan reaction and decide to go for it. Hopefully this will indeed happen, and Jabba the Hutt will become a reality.
