James Gunn says there’s one Guardians of the Galaxy Easter egg that has yet to be fully discovered. Gunn made his MCU directorial debut with 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and had the difficult task of introducing general audiences to the ragtag group of lesser-known comic book characters. It was considered a major risk for the still-growing MCU, which back then hadn’t fully reached the levels of popularity it has today. Luckily, it was a risk that paid off in a big way, with audiences embracing the colorful cosmic team and praising Guardians of the Galaxy as one of the best movies in the MCU at the time.
Gunn returned for the second installment, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, in 2017. He was set to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3., but was briefly fired from the project following the reemergence of some old offensive tweets. However, his Guardians cast and Marvel fans stuck by him, and Marvel rehired him for the project. Vol. 3 hasn’t been given an official release date just yet, but Gunn is expected to begin production on it once he completes The Suicide Squad for DC. As The Suicide Squad is currently in post-production, a start date for Vol. 3 might not be too far off, barring any coronavirus-related issues.
Before jumping ahead to Vol. 3, however, Gunn took a trip back to where it all began and participated in a quarantine watch party of Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn shared a lot of interesting tidbits on Twitter about the film, but there was one tease that’s bound to cause some bewilderment among fans. For years now, Gunn has teased the presence of an Easter egg within the film that no one has fully discovered. When someone asked Gunn if anyone has correctly guessed what it is, Gunn replied people have gotten “about 60% of it,” and shared no further clues.
Gunn also teased what’s to come for the Guardians, mentioning that Rocket’s (Bradley Cooper) yet-to-be-revealed backstory is a big part of the future for the characters. He also spoke about the actual process of making the film; the hardest part for Gunn was adding in Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) cameo at Marvel’s behest. Gunn can always be counted on to share some new insight into his projects on social media, and his presence at the watch party proved to be a valuable experience for fans.
When it comes to Easter eggs, they can either be incredibly obvious or, like the mysterious Guardians of the Galaxy egg, very hard to find. Gunn must be very proud to have included an Easter egg that fans still can’t find, even nearly six years after the film’s release. Needless to say, it isn’t as easy as spotting Howard the Duck in the post-credits scene. Eventually, someone will hopefully track it down and solve the mystery.
