Grey’s Anatomy: Why Nick Shouldn’t Follow Meredith To Boston

Grey’s Anatomy: Why Nick Shouldn’t Follow Meredith To Boston

The return of Grey’s Anatomy season 19 in February will see Meredith and her children leaving Seattle for Boston, but it’s unclear whether or not her boyfriend Nick will follow them on the cross-country move. Dr. Nick Marsh joined the staff at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital as the director of the residency program and a transplant surgeon. In the Grey’s Anatomy season 19 fall finale, Nick told Richard that he wasn’t sure if he’d be joining Meredith in Boston, but the episode also provided reasoning for him not to.

While Grey’s Anatomy season 19 has confirmed Nick and Meredith are endgame, their relationship does not mean he should follow her to Boston. Nick and Meredith’s relationship started with the distance between them, with Meredith splitting her time between Seattle and Minnesota, where Nick worked, in season 18. However, the distance proved too much when Meredith decided to stay in Seattle. The couple only repaired their relationship in season 19 when Nick moved to Seattle to take on the job as director of the residency program. Because of this job, following Meredith to Boston would be a mistake.

Nick Adds Freshness To Residency Program

Grey’s Anatomy season 18 saw the residency program, formerly run by Richard, fall apart. So when it was reinstated in season 19, Nick was the perfect choice to take on the director role. Gone from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital are the days when interns would be set up to fail in surgeries, which is why George was called 007. Instead, under Nick’s care, the season 19 interns have been given room to grow and prove themselves while working together. They are a class of underdogs handpicked by Meredith, with Grey Sloan being their last hope at becoming surgeons, and Nick is helping them meet their potential.

When Nick and Meredith discussed her impending move in the Grey’s Anatomy season 19 fall finale, he told her, “If I follow you, I’m deserting this class.” As Richard expressed, the hospital is already taking a big hit by losing Meredith as interim chief of surgery and head of general surgery. They already have to find Grey Sloan’s next chief of surgery, and with the residency program just getting back on its feet, Nick plays a vital part in its survival and success. It would be a shame for him to follow Meredith to Boston and leave the program behind.

Nick Is A Throwback To McDreamy And McSteamy Days

The early days of Grey’s Anatomy were memorable for great storylines, high drama, and complicated relationships, but also for the hotness of Derek, also known as McDreamy, and Mark, also known as McSteamy. Together, they formed a duo of world-class surgeons and ladies’ men that have not been seen on the show since their characters were killed off. That is until Nick joined the cast. Derek may have been called McDreamy, but Nick has proven himself to be just as, if not dreamier since he was promoted to series regular.

Scott Speedman rose to fame as a heartthrob in the late 90s/early 2000s on Felicity. Though he told InStyle that he thought his “heartthrob status expired … maybe a decade ago,” his role on Grey’s Anatomy proves otherwise. Beyond his obvious good looks, he has a chemistry with Meredith that Grey’s Anatomy has been scrambling to find since Derek’s death in season 11. With Nick providing such a hot throwback to Grey’s Anatomy’s early days, it feels like Meredith has finally found a true romantic match again, regardless of whether Nick follows her to Boston.
