Green Lantern’s Secret Cameo Confirmed In DC’s New Movie

Warning! This article contains Blue Beetle SPOILERS.

Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto opens up on the highly speculated Green Lantern cameo in the Jaime Reyes-starring movie. After being in the works for several years, Blue Beetle came out in theaters this year, bringing Jaime to life on the big screen. Starring Xolo Maridueña as the titular hero, Blue Beetle follows the origin story of the beloved character as he bonds with Khaji-Da, an alien Scarab that turns him into the DC icon. As much as Blue Beetle featured the backstory for Jaime, the movie also included how Khaji-Da made it to Earth.

During the Scarab’s origin story sequence, a green light ended up hitting it, which fueled speculations about whether or not that was meant to be a DC Easter egg as part of Khaji-Da’s introduction. It turns out that was indeed the case, as Soto, the Blue Beetle director, revealed to Collider during an IMAX screening that the green light was none other than a Green Lantern. Without revealing which specific Green Lantern it was, Soto shared the following about including this as a fun Easter egg in Blue Beetle:

There’s more. At the beginning of the title sequence, for those of you guys that follow the Blue Beetle comics, there’s a green light that hits this character, and that’s a Green Lantern. If you didn’t catch it, watch it again.

Why So Few People Spotted Blue Beetle’s Green Lantern Cameo

Green Lantern’s Secret Cameo Confirmed In DC’s New Movie

While some were able to pick up on the Easter egg, it is understandable how not everyone was able to catch Green Lantern’s cameo in Blue Beetle. For starters, a green light could have been anything, especially when it is a sequence where Khaji-Da is traveling through space. In the same chat with Collider, Soto also made a point to note that the Green Lantern secret cameo was discrete by design, and also alludes to a prospective subtle tease of Martian Manhunter in the movie as well.

Even though Blue Beetle wasn’t initially designed to be part of a new DC continuity, Green Lantern’s cameo works without conflict with what DC Studios are doing with those characters. Given that Khaji-Da made it to Earth decades ago, that Green Lantern could have a previous Emerald Knight before Hal Jordan, John Stewart, or even Guy Gardner. If anything, Blue Beetle helps extend the Green Lantern Corps mythology in the DC Universe, which is perfect for DC Studios as they are aiming for the DC Universe to have more connectivity.

With various DC superheroes and villains set up in Blue Beetle, it will be exciting to see how Jaime fits into the larger DC Universe, especially when Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters,” truly kicks off. Whether that would be in Blue Beetle 2 or other DC projects, there are multiple ways for Jaime’s story to continue after the events of the first movie. But for now, the world will have to wait and see what happens as Blue Beetle continues playing in theaters.
