Green Lantern John Stewart Just Earned Endless Winter’s Coolest Moment

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Justice League #58 from Andy Lanning, Ron Marz, and Xermanico

In the latest chapter of DC’s Endless WinterGreen Lantern John Stewart had to face the Frost King and his armies on his own for for a short period of time before his allies in the Justice League could arrive. During this brief solo battle, the Green Lantern actually got some good blows in, and even held his own against the Frost King’s forces. While it was already teased by the event’s creators that Green Lantern was going to be strongly featured, John Stewart certainly doesn’t disappoint in this latest issue, earning him the coolest moment so far in the Endless Winter event.

Already in Endless Winter, it’s been revealed that this isn’t the first time the Frost King has threatened the world with a global blizzard. Back in the 10th Century, an ancient Justice League comprised of the Amazon Queen Hippolyta, the Viking Prince, Black Adam, and an older version of Swamp Thing united to try and stop the Frost King’s first attack. While they were able to somehow stop him and the winter he created, it was only temporary. Now, the Frost King has returned to unleash a new magical blizzard across the globe, and the Justice League of the modern era have been at a loss in their attempts to end it and defeat the Frost King once and for all.

This all leads to the fifth chapter of Endless Winter and latest issue of Justice League seeing Green Lantern John Stewart doing all he can to keep innocents safe from the Frost King’s infinite army of monstrous ice avatars under his command. Upon his return to the Hall of Justice, Stewart is met with what looks to be the Frost King himself with a legion of avatars at his back. After calling the Justice League for some help, the Green Lantern holds the foe off for as long as he can, and it’s pretty spectacular seeing Stewart go toe to toe with the Frost King.

Thankfully, the Justice League does arrive to provide some much needed back-up to John’s epic efforts. However, Stewart’s not done being awesome just yet. While the League holds off all of the avatars, Flash tells Stewart to go after the Frost King himself. Stewart complies, using his power ring to create a construct of a mighty green battle axe, which he uses to great effect, seemingly cleaving the Frost King in half. However, it soon becomes apparent that the Frost King Stewart slew was not in actuality the real Frost King, but instead a clever and convincing imitation of the real deal. In actuality, the Frost King is still in an unknown location within the very heart of the storm he’s created.

Despite the actual Frost King not being present during the attack on the Hall of Justice, John Stewart’s actions were still impressive nonetheless. As the event has indicated thus far, Stewart and his power ring charged with willpower may be one of the best weapons the Justice League has against the icy hordes. In light of that, here’s hoping Green Lantern John Stewart will get more times to shine as Endless Winter continues from DC Comics.
