Gossip Girl: The 10 Biggest Lies The Characters Told

Gossip Girl: The 10 Biggest Lies The Characters Told

Few other shows got as scandalous as Gossip Girl, and other teen shows still try to match up to the notoriety that the CW show was so well known for in the 2010s. The anonymous blogger (who was, incredulously, Dan Humphrey), Chuck, Blair, Serena, and sundry side characters were masters of manipulating the truth, and sometimes fabricating outrageous lies for their own benefit.

The extent to which the Upper East Siders would go to get their way was unbelievable, with rumors of STDs and fake deaths being fair game. From all the gossip on the show, these were the most sordid lies people said to each other on Gossip Girl.

Gossip Girl Lied That Serena Had An STD

Gossip Girl: The 10 Biggest Lies The Characters Told

One of the most embarrassing rumors that Gossip Girl spread was about Serena’s sex life and how she had a disease. Not only was this a terrible thing to lie about, but it also led to Serena being slut-shamed by her partners and so-called friends in general.

Nate, Dan, and several others rushed, rather publicly, to clinics to get tested in case they had had what Serena supposedly did. For someone who was only in her teens, this lie was a heavy burden to bear.

Ivy Dickens Pretended To Be Charlie Rhodes

Gossip Girl was a show about the obscenely wealthy, therefore it was no surprise that people were ready to impersonate others to get a share of some of that money. Here, Carol Rhodes hired Ivy to impersonate her own daughter (Serena’s cousin), so that her trust fund could be transferred to her.

This farce was a long con, and Ivy played it remarkably well, even getting something out of it for herself. Sadly, she thought she had gained a real family, but didn’t think that fooling people into relationships usually angered said parties.

Blair Lied To Nate About Sleeping With Chuck

Chuck and Blair became the most iconic Gossip Girl couple, but when they first had sex, they were nothing but a dirty little secret. Blair was still with Nate, and the two had planned to have their first times with each other.

Funnily enough, Nate had already had sex with Serena years before and never told Blair, and Blair’s dalliance with Chuck in his limousine was also kept hush-hush by the Upper East Side socialite. When this lie did come into the open, it led to a fallout between the boys.

Lily Claimed Ben Had Inappropriate Relations With Serena

The parenting decisions of Lily Van der Woodsen were questionable at best, and criminal at their worst. When Serena got a little close to her professor Ben, Lily forged a document with Serena’s signature, stating that she and Ben had had inappropriate relations.

This was a death knell for Ben since Serena was underage at that time. Sadly, Serena had no idea that Lily had lied using her name and sent an innocent man to prison, which led to Juliet coming after her.

Bart Faked His Own Death

Robert John Burke as Bart Bass in Gossip Girl

In a shocking turn of events, Bart Bass passed away and left Chuck fatherless, but he was back to life just as quickly. He had faked an elaborate plan where he faked his death to save his family and didn’t even bother informing his only son about the scheme.

Chuck then learned of his survival through a complicated plot involving fake mothers and a Gentleman’s Club, but Bart then turned on his son like a snake. He then died in a scuffle on top of a Manhattan high rise — talk about drama.

William Diagnosed Lily With Fake Cancer

William van der Woodsen looks stony in Gossip Girl.

This storyline was hard to keep up with, since there were multiple webs of lies involved in it. Lily misled Rufus by telling him she was with Cece all summer, whereas she actually spent it in the care of her ex-husband William, who was supposedly treating her for cancer.

The bombshell dropped when it was revealed that instead of curing her, William was actually medicating her in a way that she would show symptoms of cancer. This meant that she never actually was sick, and William led her to believe she had a terminal illness. It doesn’t get darker than that.

Georgina Claimed Dan Got Her Pregnant

If evil had a name, it was Georgina Sparks. The mastermind fell into trouble with the Russians while also being pregnant, and her solution to the problem was to pin down Dan Humphrey, someone she had hooked up with once, and tell him that the baby was his.

Ironically, Dan even believed someone as cunning as Georgina, and he agreed to take care of Baby Milo to his best abilities. Georgina took advantage of his big heart and almost succeeded in her big scam.

Blair Convinced Chuck That Eva Was A Gold Digger

Chuck and Eva prepare to leave Paris for New York in Gossip Girl

Blair was extremely jealous that Chuck returned from Paris with Eva, who seemed to bring out a good side to him. In a typical Blair moment, she cooked up a scheme to expose Eva’s profession as a sex worker, and when that didn’t work she planted Chuck’s passport in her bags and made her look like she was taking advantage of him.

Sadly, Eva and Chuck’s relationship was the only one that was remotely healthy on the show, but Blair’s lie blew it to smithereens.

Louis Hoodwinked Blair About The Nature Of Their Marriage

The trick that Prince Louis pulled on Blair Waldorf had international implications since it involved the monarchy of Monaco, and Blair playing the role of a dutiful princess in a farcical marriage that was devoid of love and affection.

Louis’ lie was exceptionally devious because he could have just called off the marriage, but he misled Blair into the wedding under false pretenses, then crashed and burned all her dreams. Moreover, he also hung a massive dowry over her head if she wanted to leave.

Dan Lied By Omission About Being Gossip Girl

The biggest, baddest lie of all time was the fact that Daniel Humphrey from Brooklyn was the sassy and sneaky Gossip Girl who was spilling all the beans on the Upper East Siders. He gained people’s confidence, lied, and exposed his friends’ deepest secrets – all for fun.

It was astounding that his friends forgave him as easily as they did because he did some real harm through his online shenanigans for years.
