Gossip Girl Actor’s 2023 Shark Movie Is Now On Netflix’s US Top 10 Chart

2023 shark movie Deep Fear has now found Netflix success as it makes its way onto the US top 10 chart. Starring Gossip Girl’s Ed Westwick, Deep Fear tells the story of a yachtswoman who is forced by angry drug traffickers to recover their sunken cocaine stash in storm, shark-infested seas. Deep Fear is directed by Marcus Adams and stars Westwick alongside Mãdãlina Ghenea and Macarena Gόmez.

Deep Fear achieved Netflix success as it reaches top 10 chart status in the United States. Deep Fear came in no. 7 on the list for the week of January 29–February 4. Topping the list this week were The Postcard Killings and The Greatest Night in Pop.

How Does Deep Fear Compare to Other Recent Shark Movies?

Deep Fear was primarily a Netflix-only release, with only a tiny theatrical release. Until recently, the film was also not available in the United States. Partially due to this fact, not a lot of people saw the film, giving the film no rating on Rotten Tomatoes either. Still, Deep Fear previously topped global charts upon its release to the platform in the fall.

Though its global release went well, Deep Fear lived in the shadow of 2023’s The Meg 2: The Trench. While The Meg 2 was poorly reviewed, with a 27% Tomatometer, the $129 million budget film was a lot better known than Deep Fear. While The Meg 2 fared pretty poorly at the domestic box office, underperforming its budget, the shark movie ended up taking in a respectable $397.7 million worldwide.

Deep Fear also follows other shark B-movies from the last decade, including the first The Meg movie, 2016’s The Shallows, and 2017’s 47 Meters Down. For a tiny film that is preceded by a number of similar films, it is impressive for Deep Fear to make it onto any Netflix top 10 list, nonetheless global lists and the United States list. Like The Shallows, Deep Fear is a female-led shark movie, but its drug trafficking plot well distinguishes itself. Perhaps those increased views will gain Deep Fear more recognition among 21st century shark movies.
