Google Stadia Snatches Up Its First Third-Party Studio

Google Stadia has purchased Typhoon Studios, the developer of the upcoming game Journey to the Savage Planet. Released on November 19, Google’s cloud gaming service was expected to be one of the greatest innovations in the industry so far, but Stadia actually has several issues.

It uses a huge amount of data, so the players are forced to drastically limit their time on the platform to avoid using up their monthly data cap in a matter of days. Plus, some users reported that the gaming platform caused their Chromecast Ultras to overheat, and even to shut down while playing. The reviews for Google Stadia have been mixed at best, mainly because of missing features and the shortage of quality exclusive titles.

Now, as IGN reports, Google Stadia purchased the developer Typhoon Studios with the intent to set up a first-party game development studio, called Stadia Games and Entertainment. Google’s studio will be based in Montreal, and its leader will be Sébastien Puel. Stadia Games and Entertainment’s team will benefit from the knowledge of the industry veterans who previously worked at Typhoon Studios. The developer of Journey to the Savage Planet is the first game studio to join Google’s ambitious project but, despite the acquisition, its upcoming game is still going to be released for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Journey to the Savage Planet is Typhoon Studios’ debut title, and it’s set for release on January 28, 2020. It’s a survival and space exploration game, with a plot similar to the one of No Man’s SkyThe game was officially announced at The Game Awards 2018. As for Typhoon Studios, the company was born after its co-founder, Alex Hutchinson, left Ubisoft in 2017, planning to start his own game development studio.

It’s clear that Google wants to make up for the issues with Stadia by creating a big library of quality exclusive titles that can attract players back to its game streaming platform. The Internet giant has already taken several steps toward this goal. Last March, Google announced the new Stadia Games and Entertainment division, and last November the company hired three Assassin’s Creed developers. Now, with the talents behind Typhoon Studios, Google will hopefully be able to develop interesting games to make the Stadia subscription worth purchasing. Also, it’s auspicable that Google keeps improving Stadia’s quality, otherwise many players won’t be able to enjoy the exclusive titles because of excessive data usage or other issues with the platform.

Journey to the Savage Planet will be released on January 28, 2020.
