Good Burger 2’s Big Villain Twist Reveal Explained By Creative Team

Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Good Burger 2!

With the sequel already full of nods to its original movie, the Good Burger 2 creative team are explaining how the big villain twist reveal ties back to its predecessor. The Paramount+ comedy picks up 26 years after the cult classic original, finding Keenan Thompson’s Dex failing to become an entrepreneur and having to move in with Kel’s Ed to get back on his feet, returning to work at the eponymous fast food restaurant. When Good Burger gets sneakily bought out by a corporation looking to slash the entire work force, the duo must find a way to save the beloved restaurant and their friends’ jobs.

Ahead of the movie’s release, Screen Rant interviewed director Phil Traill and writers Kevin Kopelow & Heath Seifert to break down Good Burger 2. When asked about the movie’s big villain reveal that Jillian Bell’s Katt is actually the sister to the original movie’s villain, Kurt Bozwell, the creative team described it as wanting to create a deeper connection to the first movie and how they sought to balance making the connection for both newcomers and long-time fans alike. See what the group explained below:

Heath Seifert: We definitely wanted it to be a surprise and a twist that I guess we’re spoiling now for everybody watching this movie. [Chuckles] But yeah, I think it was just one of the ideas we had, as we were breaking the story. Again, we wanted to have the evil bad guy, and at some point, it dawned on us that there should be a connection to the original film, and so we are happy that it came out well.

Phil Traill: You know, one of the things that these guys did was if you’ve watched the original movie, there’s lots for you to discover in this new one, like, “Oh, that’s Kurt’s sister,” and you’ll put all the pieces together. But if you haven’t seen the original, then it still works, right? She’s just an evil villain baddie, so it works for both sides, which is kind of a hard thing to do. But they sort of pulled that off really well.

Heath Seifert: I think if you haven’t seen the original, you’re not going to be too confused by this film. I think you’ll be able to follow what’s happening just fine.

How Good Burger 2’s Villain Twist Honored Longtime Fans

With Kopelow and Seifert back in the writers chairs, Good Burger 2 offered a wide range of Easter eggs for longtime fans of the original movie. In addition to Mitchell performing a new version of the iconic “We’re All Dudes” song he originally made with ska band Less Than Jake, the sequel features a few returning stars from the original, including Carmen Electra as Roxanne, Kurt’s former henchwoman-turned-Ed’s babysitter, and Josh Server as Fizz, a fellow Good Burger employee revealed to have been frozen for 22 years. Even Sinbad, who appeared as school teacher Mr. Wheat in the original, makes a sneaky cameo as a business manager who cuts ties with Dex over the phone in the beginning of the sequel.

Having been kept under wraps during the movie’s marketing, Good Burger 2‘s villain reveal came as a welcome surprise for longtime fans of the original movie, keeping the story a rounded treat for those looking for a nostalgic ride. On top of that, it also stays true to the first movie’s message of the importance of small business over corporate monopolization. Despite having a secret sauce that could be world-famous, and Dex nearly selling his soul to become rich, the two come together with their wits to ensure that their self-owned restaurant remains a cozy place open to all customers.

Critics and audiences seem to appreciate this devotion to blending the nostalgic nods to the original and updated stories and characters in Good Burger 2. Though just narrowly a Rotten score, the sequel currently sits at a 59% approval from critics on review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes while the audience score sits at a 69%, the former of which nearly doubles the original’s 33% score. Additionally, with Good Burger 2 breaking the viewership record for Paramount+ previously set by Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, Seifert, Kopelow and Traill’s efforts look to have paid off.
