Gone Girl Star Debunks Filming Shut Down Over Baseball Cap Debate

Carrie Coon has seemingly put an end to rumors that the filming of David Fincher’s Gone Girl was shut down for days over a debate regarding a baseball cap. The actress, who was Emmy-nominated for her role on the TV show Fargo, has experience on both film and TV, including as the voice of the villainous Proxima Midnight in Avengers: Infinity War. Perhaps her most recognisable role however was as Margo, the sister of Ben Affleck’s Nick Dunne in Fincher’s dark mystery-thriller Gone Girl in 2014.

A favorite tidbit for movie trivia fans is the rumor that Gone Girl’s production was halted for up to four days during filming due to a debate between Fincher and Affleck. The supposed argument came as a result of Affleck’s character being required to wear a New York Yankees baseball cap while going incognito. Affleck is a diehard fan of the Boston Redsox, and supposedly refused to follow the direction, apparently causing filming to be delayed as the two battled it out. In the finished film, Affleck’s Dunne actually wears a Mets cap, adding some possible validity to the story.

Speaking to THR, Coon set the record straight on the story of the baseball cap, saying “I do not recall a four-day shutdown over a hat.” Seeing the funny side, the actress added she believed there had been “a touch of exaggeration” to the story, admitting that Affleck and Fincher are “both very passionate.” While Coon doesn’t deny the argument might’ve taken place, she seemingly debunks the idea that it caused such a dramatic delay. Talking of the relationship between the actor and director, Coon reiterates that “David Fincher gives Ben a lot of sh*t just in general. But Ben really likes it,” confirming that everything remained civil on set in the end. See the actress’ full interview quote below:

”I do not recall a four-day shutdown over a hat, […] So I think that might’ve been a touch of exaggeration, though they are both very passionate. And also, David Fincher gives Ben a lot of sh*t just in general. But Ben really likes it. I mean, the thing that was hard about being on set is that Ben was always behind the camera asking David why he was doing what he was doing and interrogating him like he was a film school nerd. So it was sometimes hard to get Ben to focus.”

Coon recently revealed that she found her performance in Gone Girlhorrific” to watch, resulting in Fincher defending her publicly and praising her role in the Oscar-nominated movie. Coon is returning to the big screen this month, playing a part in the new Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The actress plays Callie, the daughter of the late Harold Ramis’ Egon Spengler from the original Ghostbusters movies. Meanwhile, her former director Fincher is working on a new project with Netflix: the cinematic documentary series Voir.

Movie trivia fans and Gone Girl enthusiasts alike will be glad to finally have some solid truth regarding the baseball cap debate. However, it may never be truly known just how heated the argument got. In the end, the branded sports hat didn’t have too much of an effect on the finished film, which went on to impress audiences as one of the standout dramas of 2014. Coon’s role as Margo was a fan-favorite supporting character and led to the actress’ flourishing continued career, so a small disagreement over a baseball cap seems a fair price to pay for Gone Girl‘s ultimate success.
