Golden Globes 2024’s 10 Biggest Snubs & Surprises

Golden Globes 2024’s 10 Biggest Snubs & Surprises

The 2024 Golden Globes had a number of surprises and a few snubs across its various categories in both film and television. With 2023 being a great year in both film and television, the level of competition was fairly stiff especially compared to the last couple of years which were greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. While a few titles were delayed to 2024 due to the dual WGA and SAG strikes such as Dune: Part Two, 2023 was still able to deliver a wealth of new releases from acclaimed creators such as Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, and Yorgos Lanthimos.

The Golden Globes has undergone multiple changes since last year. The biggest change is the disbandment of the controversial Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which had made up the judges of the award ceremony since 1944. The ceremony also aired on CBS instead of NBC for the first time since 1982. NBC notably did not air the 2021 Golden Globes due to concerns about diversity and allegations of racism against the HFPA, which led to Dick Clark Productions acquiring the rights and properties of the Golden Globes for the 81st ceremony.

10 Best Supporting Actress In Film – Da’Vine Joy Randolph, The Holdovers

Won over Julianne Moore & Rosamund Pike

The first award that was given at the 81st Golden Globes was somewhat of a surprise given the amount of talent that was in the pool of nominees. The award for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture was given to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for her role as Mary Lamb in The Holdovers. While Randolph, who was also featured in two other nominated titles, Only Murders in the Building and Rustin, is incredibly deserving of the award, it is somewhat surprising that she won over both Julianne Moore in May December and Rosamund Pike in Saltburn.

9 Best Actor In Limited Series – Steven Yeun, Beef

Won over John Hamm & Matt Bomer

Beef Netflix Show Steven Yeun Daniel Cho

While Beef was a very popular and critically acclaimed Netflix series that aired back in April 2023, Steven Yeun’s win for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television could be considered a bit of a snub. John Hamm was one of the favorites in the category going into the 2024 Golden Globes for his role in FX’s celebrated Fargo anthology series, but it was Matt Bomer’s performance as Hawk Fuller in the Showtime limited series Fellow Travelers that feels very overlooked.

8 Best Screenplay – Justine Triet, Arthur Harari, Anatomy of a Fall

Won over Oppenheimer, Poor Things, & Killers of the Flower Moon

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was Justine Triet and Arthur Harari’s win for Anatomy of a Fall in the Best Screenplay – Motion Picture category. While Anatomy of A Fall tells a sharp and compelling story, it was an underdog that beat out the collective experience of Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer, Inception, Interstellar), Eric Roth (Killers of the Flower Moon, Forrest Gump, Dune), Greta Gerwig (Barbie, Lady Bird, Little Women), and Tony McNamara (Poor Things, The Favourite).

7 Best Stand-Up Comedy Performance – Ricky Gervais, Ricky Gervais: Armageddon

Ricky Gervais: Armageddon special has caused controversy

It’s no surprise that Ricky Gervais is still a funny and successful comedian in this day and age, which makes his Golden Globe for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television plausible. It is surprising, however, that the Golden Globes would honor him in this way considering some of the brash commentary he made as a five-time host of the ceremony in 2020. His special that won, titled Ricky Gervais: Armageddon, has also sparked controversy for some of his jokes about terminally ill children, making it a bold selection for sure.

6 Best Picture, Non-English Language – Anatomy of a Fall, France

Won over Past Lives & The Zone of Interest

Anatomy of a Fall Sandra Huller Vincent

It’s not as surprising that Anatomy of a Fall would win the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language category as it is that it won Best Screenplay – Motion Picture, but it beat out some excellent contenders. Both The Zone of Interest (United Kingdom/USA) and Past Lives (USA) received just as much if not more critical acclaim than Anatomy of a Fall. While it’s not shocking that Anatomy of a Fall won this category, both Past Lives and The Zone of Interest might have been more favored going into the 2024 Golden Globes.

5 Best Animated Film – The Boy and the Heron

Won over Spider-Verse & Super Mario Bros.

In what is arguably the most pleasant surprise of the night, The Boy and the Heron, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Kiki’s Delivery Service), won the Best Motion Picture – Animated category. The Boy and the Heron beat out two of the most profitable movies of 2023, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, to take home the well-deserved Golden Globe.

4 Best Limited Series – Beef, Netflix

Won over Fargo & Fellow Travelers

It makes sense that Beef won Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television considering its two lead actors won Golden Globes as well. Despite the popularity of the Netflix hit series, it can be argued that other nominations were more deserving of the award, particularly Showtime’s Fellow Travelers starring Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey, and FX’s Fargo starring John Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

3 Best Actor In Musical Or Comedy – Paul Giamatti, The Holdovers

Giamatti’s first Golden Globe win since 2011

Paul Giamatti’s win in the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category is somewhat surprising considering the strength of his competition. In what was one of Giamatti’s best performances in years, The Holdovers beat out Timothée Chalame’st profitable Wonka, Jeffrey Wright’s critically acclaimed American Fiction, and Joaquin Phoenix’s bizarre Beau Is Afraid. Winning against Joaquin Phoenix in an acting category is an accomplishment in its own right.

2 Best Supporting Actress In Television – Elizabeth Debicki, The Crown

Debicki’s first Golden Globe win, second nomination

The Crown season 6 Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana sitting on a couch in a green sweater

Elizabeth Debicki gives a transformative performance as Princess Diana in The Crown, which makes her Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role on Television well-deserved. With all the love for Succession at the 2024 Golden Globes, the award could have easily gone to J. Smith-Cameron’s underrated performance as Gerri Kellman in Succession. Debicki also beat out Meryl Streep for Only Murders in the Building which again is an accomplishment in itself.

1 Best Actress In Television Series – Ayo Edebiri, The Bear

Edebiri’s first Golden Globe win & nomination

The Bear did extremely well at the 2024 Golden Globes, winning Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Jeremy Allen White taking home the award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy once again. With The Bear season 2, Ayo Edebiri jumped from a supporting role to a lead, which led her to defeat the likes of Natasha Lyonne (Poker Face), Elle Fanning (The Great), and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) to take home her very first Golden Globe.
