Godzilla’s New Titan Is Officially “The Most Dangerous Kaiju on Earth”

Godzilla’s New Titan Is Officially “The Most Dangerous Kaiju on Earth”

Warning: contains spoilers for Godzilla: War for Humanity #2!Despite being the planet’s Alpha Titan, Godzilla is now facing a threat that is challenging his title of King of the Monsters. The monstrous Zoospora is a brand-new threat that is currently causing chaos across the world, with Godzilla unwilling to take on the kaiju, which is well on its way to wiping out humanity.

In Andrew MacLean and Jake Smith’s Godzilla: War for Humanity #2, Zoospora’s reign of terror continues, as it intercepts Anguirus’ migration pattern in Madagascar. After defeating the Titan in a vicious fight, it displays what makes it so deadly – the ability to produce a black ooze which sends other kaiju into a killing frenzy. While the M.O.G.U.E.R.A. mech is dispatched to tackle Zoospora, it’s attacked and destroyed by a rabid Anguirus, adding the Titan to a growing list of Zoospora’s victims who have become obsessed with attacking humanity in its wake. The scientists studying Zoospora share that as well as this unique power, its behavior is totally different from other kaiju, in that it can’t be predicted or tracked – its plant-like physiology allows it to almost cease to exist between attacks, making it impossible to stay ahead of. They say:

Unlike other kaiju, Zoospora has displayed nothing but aggression. … It doesn’t behave much like other kaiju at all. For example, between battles, it sinks back into the Earth, presumably, flattening itself and dispersing its vine-like body underground. For these reasons and more, Zoospora may be the most dangerous kaiju on Earth.

Zoospora Is Surpassing Godzilla as King of the Monsters

Godzilla’s New Titan Is Officially “The Most Dangerous Kaiju on Earth”

Zoospora’s origin and motives are so far unknown, but what fans do know is that Godzilla refuses to fight it. The issue offers two theories as to why, as different factions weigh in on Zoospora’s presence – either Godzilla approves of Zoospora rendering humanity extinct and ending their threat to the natural world, or he is too concerned with caring for his son Minilla to join the battle – a reasonable concern, since Minilla has been targeted by other Titans in the story so far. The issue ends with Mothra attacking Godzilla, hoping to draw him into the fight. However, it may already be too late – at this point, Zoospora has a small army of kaiju under its spell, and its unique biology makes it a physical match even for the King of Monsters.

Zoospora Is Turning Other Titans Wild

It’s always fun to see the Godzilla franchise deal with a new kind of threat, and Zoospora is certainly that. Godzilla: War for Humanity depicts a world where kaiju are understood and even managed by humanity. World governments know their migration paths, their hibernation routines, and how to ensure they steer clear of populated areas. With Godzilla also around to mediate Titan vs Titan territorial disputes, the system is working as well as it could. However, humanity is still behaving carelessly with the natural world, raising the possibility that Zoospora really is here to ‘save’ the planet by driving the world’s other Titans into a frenzy of violence.

Zoospora Is One of Godzilla’s Biggest Threats Ever

Of course, Godzilla will eventually take on Zoospora, but it’s unclear how he could win. Zoospora’s tendrils and immense strength have made short work of other Titans, and its black bile acts quickly and effectively. If Godzilla is turned against humanity, it’s game over for the species, who so far have had no success in fighting back against Zoospora’s attacks. Hopefully, the title’s human scientists can think up a way to give Godzilla some advantage, because as it currently stands, Zoospora is the franchise’s new deadliest Titan.
