Godzilla’s Enhanced MonsterVerse Powers Show What Being Earth’s Alpha Actually Means

It’s no secret that Godzilla is the King of the Monsters, but the current MonsterVerse movies don’t fully explain what that means exactly. Obviously he’s the strongest kaiju on the planet, but it turns out there’s more to being the Earth’s alpha than just strength and dominance alone, and Godzilla’s enhanced powers show that explicitly in one comic book continuation of his MonsterVerse saga.

The MonsterVerse is a modern retelling of the Godzilla mythos, consisting of 2014’s Godzilla, 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and 2021’s Godzilla vs Kong. Throughout the saga, fans watch as Godzilla makes his presence known to the world as he battles rogue kaiju and proves himself superior to them all (including the giant killer-robot Mechagodzilla). However, what isn’t shown is how intune Godzilla is with the Earth itself, as well as every creature on it. Indeed, how does he always know when a kaiju is out of line on some random corner of the planet? Or when humanity is manipulating the natural order and doing something that’s harmful to the world (like with the building of Mechagodzilla)? Well, that level of planetary awareness is actually the real reason why Godzilla is the King of the Monsters, with his immense strength simply being how he maintains that title.

The Earth Is An Extension Of Godzilla Himself

In the canonical addition to MonsterVerse continuity, Godzilla: Dominion by Greg Keyes and Drew Johnson, readers are shown what Godzilla was doing between the events of King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs Kong. Incredibly weakened from his fight with King Ghidorah, and unable to rest in his ancestral home due to the fact that it was blown up as a result of their battle, Godzilla is tired and searching for a place to recharge. However, since he was recognized as the King of the Monsters at the end of the film, Godzilla has a job to do in maintaining order around the globe. He breaks up territory disputes, destroys man-made pollution plants, and even battles a challenger to his proverbial throne. All the while, Godzilla is searching for a new place he can call home, and he’s able to do all this by tapping into the world around him, as it is quite literally an extension of himself.

The idea that Godzilla is so in tune with the world is an amazing addition to his established lore. This ability not only better explains why he, out of all the kaiju on the planet, is the King of the Monsters, but also proves true his moniker. This power makes Godzilla really seem like an elder god, something of a Lovecraftian Old One whose existence is older than anything humans are used to seeing, and whose powers are beyond the understanding of mortals. This comic confirms that Godzilla isn’t just a big lizard with atomic breath, he is more like the physical representative of the Earth itself. Therefore, it is his job to maintain order and protect the planet, as the world truly is his dominion, for they are one and the same.

Godzilla can feel, hear, and see everything on Earth the way a human can with their physical body, which is an incredible upgrade that was given to him within this newly established MonsterVerse continuity, and proves definitively why Godzilla is the undisputed King of the Monsters.
