Godzilla’s Enemies Discover the Best Way to Defeat the King of the Monsters

Godzilla’s Enemies Discover the Best Way to Defeat the King of the Monsters

In the 70 years of Godzilla’s existence, he’s been seen as a monster, a king, a protector, a metaphor, an enemy, and a friend. Above all else, he has always been undefeated. In a brand-new comic from IDW Publishing, humanity has finally found a way to fight back that might actually work – treating him like any other force of nature, and learning to live alongside him.

In the Godzilla Valentine’s Day Special – written by Zoe Tunnell with art by Sebastian Piriz and Rebecca Nalty – two humans, reporter Piper Simmons, and Earth Defense Force agent Lieutenant Sauveterre. keep running into each other over the course of five years, as each tracks Godzilla in their own way.

While the EDF does save lives, they also keep building weapons and Mecha-Godzillas to unsuccessfully take Godzilla down. Piper argues that these just create more destruction, and rile up the monsters. Despite not having EDF’s resources, she tracks monsters more successfully, and discovers what causes them to attack humanity.

Humanity Wants To Fight Godzilla, Which Makes Godzilla Fight Back

Godzilla Valentine's Day Special, Godzilla roars in the background; Piper details why she doesn't like the EDF

In Godzilla Valentine’s Day Special, Piper Simmons is a bored office drone, whose life changes when Godzilla attacks. Nearly crushed by debris while at work, she survives long enough to get laid off. Realizing that the last time she felt truly alive was while watching Godzilla wreak havoc, she decides it’s time for a drastic career change – reporting on worldwide monster activity. Unfortunately, Lieutenant Sauveterre thinks she’s an idiot civilian, calling her a “Monster Tourist.” However, they can’t argue that Piper is always one step ahead of the EDF, both in finding monsters and evading EDF capture.

Over five years, the two continually encounter one another. Piper and the Lieutenant have instant chemistry, even at the start, but Piper hates the EDF for triggering the monster attacks, and causing more destruction; the Lieutenant, meanwhile, is both intrigued and frustrated by her repeated presence in their life. A standoff between the two gives them time to hash out their differences. Piper thinks the EDF is beyond saving, as “everyone wants to make bigger guns, or robots, so they can be the one that finally kills Godzilla.”

Godzilla Is A Powerful Force Of Nature, Like Love

Godzilla has never been a malicious creature; Godzilla Valentine’s Day Special shows how lives can be saved, and the world can be improved, by respecting nature, rather than constantly fighting it. Eventually forming their own international organization, Piper and Sauveterre have squads monitoring heat vents, pressure systems, and feeding habits of everyone from King Ghidorah to Mothra. Their monster-hunting intel is repurposed to predict and avert catastrophes, evacuate citizens to safety, and avoid confrontation with the Monsters. As the Godzilla Valentine’s Day Special shows, Godzilla’s enemies have found an unexpected way to neutralize him as a threat: live alongside him, full of love.
