Godzilla’s Bizarre New Power In GxK Sets Up Even More Wild Monsterverse Transformations

Godzilla’s Bizarre New Power In GxK Sets Up Even More Wild Monsterverse Transformations

Warning: Spoilers for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

By handing Godzilla a bizarre new power, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire effectively set the stage for the Titan to unlock several more wild transformations. In the lead-up to the final battle with Shimo and Skar King in Godzilla x Kong’s ending, the King of the Monsters unlocked a powerful new upgrade. Undergoing a change that turned Godzilla’s atomic power from blue to pink, he achieved what the Monsterverse has dubbed the “Evolved Godzilla” form.

As it turns out, Godzilla didn’t naturally “evolve” into his Godzilla x Kong look; the power needed to obtain this form was stolen from a fellow Monsterverse Titan. First teased in Godzilla: King of the Monsters before her official introduction in Godzilla: Dominion, Tiamat was a giant serpent Titan and one of many creatures previously awakened by Ghidorah. After being found in an underwater lair in Godzilla x Kong, Tiamat had her radiation fully absorbed by Godzilla during their fight in the Arctic Ocean. Interestingly, the way in which Godzilla took Tiamat’s energy has laid the groundwork for the Monsterverse to unveil even more new Godzilla designs.

Godzilla’s Evolved Form Was Created By Tiamat’s DNA

Godzilla copied Tiamat’s genetic material

More so than the movie itself, the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire novelization explained exactly what happened when Godzilla killed Tiamat. According to the book, Godzilla succeeded in stealing Tiamat’s DNA. In other words, Tiamat’s unique genetic material – rather than just her energy – was commandeered by Godzilla. What makes this reveal so noteworthy is what it establishes about Godzilla’s powers. Godzilla has always been known as a monster who feeds on radiation, so Godzilla being able to acquire power from another radiation-fueled monster is hardly outside the norms of the franchise, but this adds new layers to what he can do.

MonsterVerse Set Up the Perfect Villain for Godzilla x Kong 3 (& They’re Not a Titan)

The MonsterVerse introduced the perfect villain for the third installment of the Godzilla X Kong franchise – and this potential foe is not a Titan.

From the looks of things, the Monsterverse version of Godzilla possesses the power to copy the DNA of other Titans, taking aspects of their physiology and merging it with his own. This detail is supported by Godzilla’s design in Godzilla x Kong, which notably borrows Tiamat’s pink energy. However, that’s not the only physical trait of “Evolved Godzilla” that hints at Godzilla’s new DNA-absorption power, as he also boasts new pink spikes on his elbows. This is not part of Godzilla’s traditional look but does resemble the pink fins on Tiamat’s body. The new white dorsal fins on Godzilla’s back also bear similarities to Tiamat.

What became of Tiamat could be an ominous sign for the fates of the other Titans lurking in the Monsterverse. Earth is littered with these creatures, with many of them being pre-established Titans that the Monsterverse had yet to show. In addition to Tiamat, King of the Monsters also confirmed the existences of Abaddon, Mokele-Mbembe, Baphomet, Yamata no Orochi, Bunyip, Amhuluk, Sekhmet, Leviathan, Typhon, and Quetzalcoatl. Any of these monsters has a chance to be the unwilling reciprocator of Godzilla’s next Monsterverse design.

In terms of what Godzilla’s next movie can do with this idea, this particular power comes with a multitude of creative opportunities. Because many of the aforementioned monsters don’t have confirmed designs or abilities yet, the Monsterverse is free to create them in a way that would suit its plans for its next take on Godzilla. In other words, it can specifically give Yamata no Orochi or Abaddon powers or physical characteristics for the specific purpose of setting up a new Godzilla transformation, whether it be in Godzilla vs. Kong 3 or a different movie entirely.

As for what these changes could amount to, there’s a range of possibilities available to the Monsterverse, including a new color for Godzilla’s power, a different version of his atomic breath, or perhaps a brand-new ability altogether. The implications of these design adjustments could vary, as they could drastically alter his physical capabilities or just bring about an aesthetic change to go along with a new power level boost. Either way, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has charted a path for the Monsterverse to endlessly refresh Godzilla’s powers, enabling him to look and feel different with each movie appearance – but at the expense of other Titans, of course.
