Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard has teased multiple versions of Godzilla in the upcoming movie, comparing it to a “training routine” for the monster. The team-up film will see its titular characters battling a new threat from the Hollow Earth, a Kong-like ape called the Skar King. In addition, Godzilla will be getting a new design, turning his scales and atomic breath pink.
Speaking with Empire, Wingard revealed Godzilla’s transformation in Godzilla x Kong is one of many versions that will appear in the movie. The director said the famous Titan’s upcoming power-ups will be inspired by martial arts movies based around training to take on a tough opponent. Check out what Wingard had to say below:
This is his version of a training routine. I’m really big into Shaw Brothers martial arts. Those films are always about, ‘Here’s a big threat, and you have to do all these things to pump yourself up so that you can take on that threat.’ You’re gonna see lots of different versions of Godzilla in this movie.
What Godzilla’s Transformation Means for Godzilla x Kong
Godzilla x Kong‘s plot will see its titular heroes getting upgraded in order to fight against the Skar King and whatever forces he’s amassed in Hollow Earth. Alongside Godzilla’s new color scheme and increased power, Kong will be getting a metallic glove to use in combat. Because of these character changes, it’s clear the new villain’s threat is going to be unlike anything they’ve faced so far in the Monsterverse.
Wingard revealing more versions of the famed kaiju in the movie means there may be even more color schemes beyond pink that get shown. It’s possible pink isn’t his final form, with even more colors for both his scales and atomic breath coming later in the movie. If that’s the case, then perhaps Kong will also have armor on more than just his hand by the time the movie reaches its climax.
Since it’s now confirmed more versions of Godzilla will show up in the film, there could be many more surprises to come that haven’t been teased in the promotional material.Godzilla x Kong could see surprise Titan returns from previous movies, as well as concepts that have yet to be explored in the Monsterverse. With plenty of ideas for the film to explore, it remains to be seen how many renditions of its characters appear in the film.
