A new Godzilla Minus One image offers a closer look at the updated design for the mighty Kaiju. From Toho Studios, the new movie follows the re-emergence of Godzilla after World War II in Japan. Godzilla Minus One was written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki and stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki.
Today, Toho Studios released a new image from the Kaiju film ahead of the Godzilla Minus One release date on December 1 in the United States. Check it out below:
The image offers a closer look at Godzilla’s updated design, which is reminiscent of previous versions, taking clear cues from the franchise’s Heisei era that lasted from 1984 to 1995. With sizable, sharp spikes sticking out of his spine, the updated design also appears to be one of the most formidable renditions, which is fitting since the new film is returning the franchise to its darker roots.
What To Know About Godzilla Minus One
Minus One is the 37th film in the overall franchise, the 33rd Godzilla film produced by Toho Studios, and the fifth film in the franchise’s Reiwa era which started in 2016. When writing the script, Yamazaki took significant inspiration from the original Godzilla film from 1954 and 2001’s Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. In addition to being the screenwriter and director, Yamazaki also wielded significant creative control over crafting the updated Godzilla design as the visual effects supervisor for Minus One.
The Godzilla Minus One release date in Japan is right around the corner on November 3. This is the same day the original Godzilla movie was released in 1954, which was chosen as the new movie’s release date to celebrate the franchise’s 70th anniversary. However, American audiences will have to wait a bit longer until December 1 to see Godzilla Minus One in theaters.
